Faculty Mentoring Program Evaluation

Dr. Richard Popp, Dean of Academic Affairs at the Stanford University School of Medicine, with the cooperation of program founders Dr. Dora Goldstein and Dr. Lars Vistnes, requested an evaluation of their junior faculty mentoring program.  Dr. David Fetterman, Director of the School of Education's M.A. Policy Analysis and Evaluation Program, conducted the evaluation with two of his graduate students, Ellie Fischbacher and Katherine Rynearson.  One of the tasks of the evaluation was to solicit mentor and mentee perspectives about the program.

The program, the first of its kind in a medical school setting, involves approximately 152 out of 203 junior faculty members. The program serves the dual purpose of adding warmth to the traditionally "chilly" climate of the School of Medicine and helping the junior faculty members through the proces of receiving tenure and/or promotion.  It has received national attention for its approach to improving the career progression of junior faculty members.  Mentors, mentees, and administrators praise the current program.  Many junior faculty members feel that participation in the program has been an invaluable asset in their career development at Stanford.  Mentors also see the benefits of the program and attribute many failures in the promotion of junior faculty members to a lack of mentoring.  While the current program has many benefits for the junior faculty, there are aspects that could be modified ensuring that Stanford will remain a leader in medical school faculty mentoring.
