Although I have way too many things due tomorrow morning and will not sleep until 9:15am, I am ridiculously happy. Things are going really well. I have a loving girlfriend, awesome friends, hilarious professors, and fascinating classes. This is a moment of Zen....

Containded in the Hum between Voice and Drum
My life is quickly turning into a Faithless song, fast electronica and amazingly chill at the same time. And at good Faithless song at that. I am making kernel coding progress, and classes are going OK. It's a lot of stuff to handle, but Naranja is amazing, and hanging out with Tristan and friends is fun. I also went to The Bridge School Benefit Concert today, at which the Red Hot Chili Peppers were awesome. So many things are going...

Figuring Things Out
Wow, things have been crazy since Friday. I've been missing Nora a lot and have been really busy, without the ability to figure things out. I've been listening to a lot of great music, Postal Service, Heather Nova, Faithless, Die Toten Hosen, Sarah McLachlan, Björk and now finally Dido. I hadn't listened to Dido at all since the end of summer, to get back the originality of it. It was a good idea to save it up. I'm starting to...

Let's get it started
I've spent the last few days watching movies and setting up my room. Enough of that. Today is the day to get started, and I am ready. I just got an email about CS 199, and things are looking good. I don't have an exact unit count or project description yet, but I am starting to prepare for the beginning of the class. Today will be a day of reading and awesomeness. I am completely and utterly excited....

A Day to Unplug
Yesterday was rather ridiculous and not too productive. First of all, I just realized that my US to Europe Plug Converter, is slightly too tight for my laptop plug to fit, so I am now filing a part of it away, cause I don't think I'll be able to buy one here. Unfortunately, after filing and cutting away on it for about two hours, I tried to fit the plug, and while it wasn't far enough to work, it was...

Arriving at Stanford
I arrived here yesterday at around 1:30 (Pacific Time, the one below my blog is set to) and dumped my stuff in my room before setting out for a tour of campus. The only thing I did before was trying to get a wireless connection to write home, without much luck. It turned out that most people aren't on campus, or were not in their rooms. The only people I was able to find initially were Eric Sun and Eric...

Spending so much time on 2 different continents as I do, can mean being separated from loved ones, family and friends for large parts of the year. However, few of my friends would be so dedicated in their endeavors to get away as Doug: Doug Wilson: what time is it there? Can Sar: 10am Doug Wilson: wow! Doug Wilson: its 10 pm here; we're on exact opposite sides of the world Can Sar: where are you? Doug Wilson: Hawaii Doug...

The Week's Work
I've been pretty busy with work this week, and did not take the time to update the blog with news of what exactly I was working on. My main activity for the week was reading "Operating Systems" by Andrew Tanenbaum. The CS-interested readers should know that this is the book that Linus Torvalds used when first learning about how OSes worked, and that he consulted in the 7 months in which he wrote the very first versions of Linux. Fewer...

New AIM Name
For those of you who don't now yet, I got a new AIM name this week: BeingCS. Here is a short explanation to those who always wondered what my old AIM name (minbari1aut, now defunct) meant: Minbari was my long time ICQ nickname and is a race from Babylon 5. The 1 came from an attempt to make the name unique for use on AIM. The aut stands for Austria. My old name was meant to be used for a...

Back Home
I've been back from Madrid since Friday and currently cooking Paella (its on the stove right now). I spent the last few days catching up on things and getting back to work. One big goal for next quarter is going to be the GRE, which I have started looking into more deeply today. While I am not worried about the math section, my vocabulary is definitely a bit rusty. The writing section has always my greatest obstacle, but two years...

Homage To Catalonia
Barcelona, to be precise. We've been in this lively city for two and a half days now, which has mostly welcomed us with scorching heat and sun. This does not, apparently, affect the city's native inhabitants who go (run) about their business undisturbed. Barcelona to me is large crowds of people crossing streets and running down Boulevards with shopping bags in their hands at an incredible pace. Its also a city of rather chaotic traffic, where crossing the street is...

I'm all packed up and ready for Spain. I had to double check if our hotel reservations for Barcelona and Madrid were for the right dates (we had to change our travel schedule a bit), and fortunately, everything worked out perfectly. Nine days in Spain should be very relaxing indeed, and I have been feeling enthusiastic and inspired today. I got back from Germany on Friday, and am going to Spain tomorrow. In between I spent a day at a nearby lake with friends. Today I am busily trying to make sure that everything is booked and ready for our Spain trip, and I will most likely be frequently blogging from both Barcelona and...

Long Line of Cars
If you want to know how spinning your car out of control feels like, read on. After getting an Austrian driver's license, every driver is now required to take part in an secure driving program, that shows you what happens when your wheels start slipping, or you somehow otherwise lose control of your car. All of this happens in a semi-controlled manner, but the first time you hit the brakes while trying to maneuver around an obstacle and your wheels...

I used the 90 minute break during BlogTalk to walk around Vienna for a bit. I started off from Schwedenplatz to the Stadtpark and then crossed the Ringstraße walking towards the Stephansdom, using some slightly unusual side streets. I then had lunch at PizzaBizzi which is a great Pizza chain (around 5 different locations), and the one in the Roten Turm Straße is particularly great. I then went towards the Opera, to buy something to drink from a nearby Supermarket...

Last week I met Miguel de Icaza at VM'04. Miguel gave Friday's keynote, about how the idea for Mono was conceived to make Gnome programs language and library independent. One of his best examples for this was Tcl/Tk, a scripting language that was extensively used for GUI design, only because Tk, its GUI toolkit was so easy to use. Prior solutions like Bonobo (also started by Miguel) failed (that one due to the cruft of Corba bindings, though I know...

I wasted this afternoon on weblog designing and philosophical discussions. It got to the point where I could not sleep because of being aggravated about the argument. A few years ago I used to think that intellectual discussions should be like debates, with one side convincing the other. It is remarkable how different I feel about this today. Maybe I just had not met other people with interesting ideas, or was too insecure to conceive that I could be wrong....

I'm sick and it's starting to get on my nerves. I've had lots of work to do over thanksgiving, and I somehow feel like I haven't gotten much done. I'm somehow unable to get started on anything and really really hope I get healthy by tomorrow so that I have energy to work again....

Happy Thanksgiving!
I just had Thanksgiving with Albert, his family, and lots and lots of friend's of Albert's family. This was my first real (big) thanksgiving dinner, and the food was delicious. Though I don't really see the point of this holiday, the evening was a lot of fun, and it was quite interesting to meet new people, some of which actually go/went to Stanford. Thanks to Albert for this awesome day. In other news, I have fixed some bugs in the...

The Beauty of Zen Gardens
Although I am not really interested in Japanese culture, I am starting to find Zen gardens to be amazingly beautiful. The thought of sitting in the grass and thinking is intrinsically beautiful to me, and I love the feeling of calm and quiet that must exist there. I often imagine myself sitting in a garden thinking, and then hearing somebody walk up to me. I open my eyes and look at them, and it feels like waking up from a...

Human vs. AI: I Win!
I just played Othello/Reversi against Max's and Greg's AI and one the first game were I thought about every move. I won 63 to 33. In the second game the AI was improved and I played quickly on instinct. I realized that I made a mistake some time into the game (right after the move), and was destroyed. This game was not very serious though, and I will have a serious rematch on Sunday. I am excited. In other news,...

Work
It is Wednesday morning, and I have three problemsets due today, and one due tomorrow that I have to finish today. Travis and I finished CS 143 yesterday and turned it in on time, and I went to EAST to work on CS 242. I am finished with the E40 problemset, the CS242 problemset and most of the E40 prelab. I now need to do the write-ups for the latter two and watch a lecture for CS 143 and do...

My Mind on the Matrix
Sleeping late, watching the Matrix and then going to a magnificent talk about cyborgs (more about that tomorrow) does weird things to my mind. I am very tired and very excited at the same time. I am unable to do work, mostly because I am agitated because I know that I will see the matrix again tonight. I am listening to Cake, especially "Commissioning A Symphony in C" which I find to be an amazingly beautiful song, mostly because I...

Getting Up For the Matrix
I got up at 3:15am this morning to go to Denny's and then to The Matrix Revolutions. I will not say much about the movie till most people have seen it, there are NO spoilers below. I liked the movie, and thinking about it I am starting to like it a lot more than I did before. Some of the things I would have done differently, and I will not accept some things as having happened, but I liked it...

Too Much for One Week
Too many things have been happening this week, and I'm overwhelmed. I had three midterms this week, which I'm all very unsure about and I got my CS 143 program back, which I am very unhappy with, eventhough I thought it was perfect. Bad stuff happened to lots of my friends and I was quite worried about some of them, which did not really affect me until I got back my program grade. Now I am fearing that getting my...

In Need of Sleep
I was planning to go to sleep at midnight yesterday becaue I have been a bit tired lately. Unfortunately this did not quite work out and I went to bed at 3am, and then had to get up at 8:30 for CS 147. The reason I went to class is because David Liddle is guest lecturing. Liddle was one of the first people to teach CS 147 a long time ago, and his work on the Alto and Star led...

It is Saturday morning and I am still alive. Last week I had a CS 242 Problemset, an E40 Problemset, a CS 143 Problemset, a CS 147 Essay, an E40 Prelab and a CS 143 program due. I also had an STS midterm. At the end of the week I was almost ready to give up, but Thursdays miraculous solution to the problem of parsing the "let" statement in Cool gave me new strength. Yesterday I went to the Panther...

Looking Forward to Friday
I was woken up by my phone ringing, got up to pick it up, and was annoyed that the call was by the Medical Center, looking for someone who was no longer assosciated with my dorm phone number (phone numbers stay the same for rooms). Unfortunately it was already to late to go back to sleep, so I had to get up and go to CS 143. I have been swamped with work this week, and I really feel like...

As work goes, this weekend has been crazy. We submitted our CS 147 project proposal today, and Eric set up a great website. Travis and me made good progress on CS 143. I finished the first half of the 143 problemset, and the second part requires information from Tuesday's lecture. We are finished with everything but let, errors and precedence. Kill Bill, Dinner and a Lot of Work
I am currently fighting against our last bug in CS 143. If anyone out there knows how it is possible to push characters that were already read back onto the stream in Jlex please send me an email. Apart from that, there is only one known difference between our Lexer and that of the Professor. According to the language specification '\0' is not valid in strings. I implemented our Lexer, so that it would complain about this. The provided binary...

Dragon's Book and Indian Food
After trying to get the Dragon's book (Compilers: Principle, Techniques, and Tools) unsuccessfully for a week, I finally got it today. I have not had enough time to read it yet, but from the table of constants it looks fascinating. While at the bookstore I also looked at the textbook for Earth Systems 10, which I will take next quarter. The class is a moderately easy 5 units, and satisfies my science requirement. It also covers an area that I...

More on the Job Fair
The job fair was both a negative and a positive experience. All the companies I were interested in were not present (Apple, Google, SUN), though they will be at future job fairs. This was, however, still a great disappointment. I gave a Resume to Amazon.com and the conversation went really well. I talked about my Coursework, CS history and areas of focus. In the end I got the recruiter's email address, and he told me to email or call him...

Today I first started working on my CS 140 Threading assignment. I read the roadmaps and several papers and have been reading through code for the last few hours. Much has happened since the last update. I am now writing this from CS 140 class, from Gates at Stanford. I failed my driver's license exam, but then got a permit to drive with my dad sitting next to me, and drove around a hundred miles in three days. I went to Turkey for 5 days, which was stressful but interesting. I now live in Naranja, Lagunita Court. All my classes seem very interesting, and though there is not that...

My driving test will be this Wednesday, I have two lessons before I have to be ready for it. I had a practice test today, and drove quite well. Unfortunately I still made some small errors that would have barred me from passing, if it had been for real. I came to close to two parking cars because I failed to reduce my speed, and made a few other mistakes, mostly related to not looking ahead far enough. Tomorrow we...

Still in London
More updates from London. Fame on Monday was great, we both really enjoyed it, and our seats were pretty good, though they were really really high and we were a bit afraid of standing up when people tried to get to their seats because of that. Pirates of the Carribean was pretty good too, definitely a fun movie but not awe inspiring or anything. Yesterday we walked around Knightsbridge and Chelsea, two richer parts of London. We rode the Subway...

The Streets of London
The last night in Nimes was quite difficult. It turned out that a group of mentally and physically handicapped people had moved into the room next to us, with which we had a shared bathroom and shower. We did not really mind that the shower was occupied for more than an hour, and that we heard loud screaming, which was a bit disturbing. But afterwards we saw that someone had removed to the door to the shower/bathroom, without even informing...

Today was pretty uneventful but still nice. First of all my e-mail account was spammed for the first time, but I guess nowadays that is pretty standard, and OSX Mail and Stanford filter pretty nicely, so everything should be fine. A Quick Trip to Montpellier
We took the TGV to Montpellier this morning, which took 25 minutes. It was very different from Nimes, starting with the large number of tourists. Most of the people that passed by us spoke a language other than French, which does not happen much in Nimes outside the youth hostel. The weather was hot as usual, but we walked very far anyway. Montpellier's proximity to the Cote 'd Azur was definitely apparent - the entire place was full of palm...

Nimes definitely is a better place than Roanne. If you are thinking about going to either of the two, choose Nimes. Yesterday evening we were taken to the youth hostel by some crazy french dude who looked like Tom Fullner, that asked us if we wanted to hitch hike to the hostel (500 meters up a hill). We decided to go because he was accompanied by a young woman and seemed pretty friendly. He took us to the hostel up...

Be informed that the last days in Paris were great. The last day was a bit cooler and we managed to stay out all day, and the day we left we went to the Sacre Coeur in the morning before leaving for the train. I am blogging this from a keyboard that is mostly normal, with a few notable exceptions, that are making it difficult to type. Please excuse any stupid spelling mistakes, they are probably not my fault. The last three days have been incredibly hot. Two days ago we reached a maximum temperature of 39 Degrees Celsius, which is the record for at least the last 10 years. Because of the heat it has been impossible to spend the entire day outside,...

I hope that at least one person who reads this blog got the Zoolander reference in the headline. It does not refer to my cousin, whose name also happens to be Paris, but to the city I'm currently in. It is soooooo hot, yesterday it was 38 degrees Celsius, which is definitely a record for this part of Europe. Today was more acceptable at around 34 degrees, but still really hot. Leaving for Paris Tomorrow
We finally managed to go to Mont St. Michel today, and it was quite an experience. First of all let me say that it reminded me of Minas Mirth (or Minas Morgul?) or whatever else the mountain that Gondor was located on in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was killed. My theory is that Tolkien was definitely influenced by this mountain. Anyway, the weather was foggy at first and there were hundreds of people trying to push...

Hot & Cold - A Tale of Two Days
Yesterday Nora and I decided to stay in Dinan, because we were too exhausted from our trip to St. Malo. That turned out to be an excellent idea, because as soon as we arrived near the cathedral of Dinan (the top of the hill on which Dinan is located) the temperature got so high that even sitting in the shade was unbearable because of the terribly hot wind. We bought salad, cheese, salami and baguette and had a wonderful self-made...

Today was an unbearably hot day. We got up early and then walked to the bus station for 40 minutes. We had to hurry, because the walk was a lot longer than expected. Hello World! I am writing this with a keyboard that is causing me considerable difficulty: Instead of qwerty, this is a "azerty" keyboard where every button is confusing. We arrived in Stansted, England yesterday and stayed in a Bed & Breakfast, that was in a 15th century farmhouse. We took a 5 mile walk to the nearest city, Bishops Stortford, where we bought food. We were so exhausted we had to take the bus back. We flew to Dinard this...

I thought the movie was great, fun to watch, and defintely one of the best comedies I have seen lately. Today was apparently the day of one of the biggest campus parties of the year: Froshfest. I am very glad I went to see The Matrix Reloaded instead. I don't really like the big organized parties where everyone says it's going to be great, and all these supposedly great things will happen. Yesteday I watched a Babylon 5 episode, in which G'Kar reads a poem by Yeats, that we read in IHUM section the same day: The Second Coming. I was excited enough to send an email to my TF, but this new revalation is just insane. Last month I went to a beach in Julia Pfeiffer State Park, near Big Sur in California. In Babylon 5, the captain of the station has a picture of exactly that beach, which in my...

New Speakers and A Bike
I finally decided to buy a pair of speakers with a bass and I am very glad I did. I got the JBL Creature speakers in silver. I am now programming, watching Babylon 5 and enjoying the amazing sound. I slightly regret not buying speakers earlier, but it did not seem like a good idea at the time. In an even more surprising move, I finally bought a bike. Although I will not use it all to much this year,...

Draw number: It's gonna be close
Our group got our draw number today: 1194 out of 2000. It could be a lot better, but I know people who suffered a 1946, so I guess we are lucky. I was very sad about this at first, but I am starting to be more positive. Right now our first choice is Toyon, which has triples. After that it get's complicated. Although I was at first feeling very very bad about the situation, I now feel more positive....

Six Degrees of Everything
Tristan was looking at my AIM list today and was surprised to find someone on my AIM list, I added when I was admitted to Stanford. I only added the person because of his interest in Cryptography, and never ever wrote him. It turns out he was in my CS 106X section for three months, and I never knew he was on my list. The story continues..........

CS 107, The Matrix, and Other Things.
The last few days I have mostly been doing work for classes. The CS 107 midterm will be tomorrow, and it will be extremely hard. For now, I have not been able to study too much. I must concentrate this evening and tomorrow, if I want a good grade. We watched The Matrix Trailer in CS 197 today, so I had to leave, because I did not want the spoilers. I talked to Tristan today; apparently Gavilan is organizing a...

Bloggig Workshop
Lora, who lives next door to me, will be an RCC next year, and she offered me to give a workshop on Weblogging in her dorm next year. Although I will not be able to teach the course on it next quarter, because I missed the deadline. I can probably teach it in winter. I am really excited about how fast weblogging is taking off for me. Although I don't have too many readers yet, I feel like I am...
