Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

What would SCO do?

I am currently reading Open Sources and found the following passage in the first chapter: The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) has gone from a leading Unix vendor to an afterthought in the span of a couple of years. SCO, the company, will probably find a way to survive, but will its flagship product, SCO Unix, be another casualty of Open Source? We now of course know what happened to SCO and how they are suing everyone in order to save...

The Irony of Copyright

I am currently reading Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig. The book is about Copyright and the Public Domain in the internet age and available as a free download under a Creative Commons license. The book mentions an H. G. Wells story called The Country of the Blind that I found online at a site called the Litrix Reading Room. Ironically the story had the following disclaimer: The text of this work is in the public domain and is not copyrighted....

Back at Stanford

I'm back at Stanford, and classes today have been very interesting. I am massively jetlagged and not even trying to fight it, but instead using it to catch up on sleep. I slept 13 hours yesterday, and am off to bed again, to sleep until 10 am tomorrow, for another 14 hours, if I don't wake up early. Goodnight everyone. Expect more blogging soon....

About to Leave

My shuttle is leaving in 20 minutes. I am about done with packing, and I'm really looking forward to coming home. Now for the long flight......

A Day 'till the flight

I bought and borrowed textbooks for next quarter, and actually only had to purchase one book. I have been ironing and packing for my flight which will leave at 2:30 pm tomorrow. I have also been working on getting a working copy of our Nachos project, which I now finally have. In order to make much more progress I will need my Assignment 3 grading results, to see what parts I will have to fix. I also submitted my AP...

A Day To Relax

I got up at at 5 pm today and did very little but relax, clean up my room, organize my computer files and do laundry. I also mapped out some more details of my research project and am now looking for a Nachos backup that has all my assignment 3 code and no assignment 4 code, because fixing that code would just needlessly complicate everything. Maybe Travis has this. Tomorrow will be spent doing a lot of last minute tasks...

MTAmazon problems

So cgi.stanford.edu cannot reliably handle the MTAmazon plugin. This is because cgi is probably the weakest machine I have ever seen, with very little memory, and I cannot wait until it is replaced with something that is genuinely useful. For now I will have to concentrate on getting the entire design to work, and then just concentrate on actual blogging rather than redesigning....

Blog Redesign and Name Change

Now that I am done with finals I am working on redesigning my blog. A very early prototype can be found here. Be aware that most of the links do not really work, and that I still need to mess with the color scheme. However, right now, I need 3 things: A name for the weblog Something to put in the top right corner, three lines of text describing the blog in a cool way Your feedback on the design...

Narrow Focus in Research Projects

I have been thinking about my project quite a bit more while studying for CS 140 and have worked out a lot of details. With something like this there is always the urge to include more and more things. That is an urge that is important to resist, as a project grows in scope it becomes exponentially harder to complete it. For something that is meant to be summer research it is best to write everything in a modular way...

Distributed Shared Memory

I think I will spend some time (either next quarter, or over summer), extending the VM assignment of Nachos. In addition to paging to Disk, I want it to be able to page to a different physical Machine on the Network. Though this is generally not too useful (less efficient than VM), unless both Nachos are on the same machine, when it becomes redundant, it would be an interesting design and programming exercise. This would of course be combined with...

Philosophical Deadend

I wasted this afternoon on weblog designing and philosophical discussions. It got to the point where I could not sleep because of being aggravated about the argument. My neighbor tried to argue that it was not legitimate to abridge the right of an individual to save a million lives, and that negative rights were inherent and unalterable. While I believe that there must be unalterable rights that cannot be violated, I do not believe that these are created out of...

Sand in my Shoes

Yesterday I finally spent some time outside, with no more programming for the quarter. Next quarter I will try to be outside as much as possible, which should work well, because I will not have programming classes. I might also start taking my laptop outside, though my battery is getting pretty weak. We went to half-moon bay at around 10:30 am and ran into some bad traffic, only to realize that the beach was completely foggy. We lay on the...

The last few days

The last few days have had some of the nicest weather I have ever seen at Stanford during winter quarter. The sun was shining outside while I was sitting in my room from Friday to Thursday. I got very little sleep, but "finished" 2 projects. My CS 161 project went OK, though there was a slight possibility of doing extremely well, at a time cost that I was not willing to commit. I think that it will hopeful go well...

The Legend of Loro

The Stanford Magazine's recent article on inscrutable Stanford traditions, featured the following excerpt on Loro's dorm theme: [T]he theme has some relationship, however tenuous, to the name of the dorm. Not so for Loro House, which earned kudos last year for its out-of-nowhere theme, Sean Connery—yes, the actor. “What better rallying cry than screaming “Sean Connery” or “Free Scotland” [one of his tattoos]?” says senior Felicia Estrada. Indeed. We’ve come a long way since “Branner sucks.” Nothing can sum up...

Coding until the Deadline

I have a Genetic Sequence Matcher for CS 161 due at midnight on Tuesday and a File System for CS 140 due on Thursday. I have programmed my part of the sequence matcher and hope that my partners will finish the rest. CS 140 is going to be a lot worse. We are still working on getting many basic functionalities to work, but unfortunately that will leave us with a few more parts of the assignment in addition to a...

It's a Beautiful Day

Today's weather at Stanford was the most beautiful in weeks. I am finally done with CS 161 homework, a class I have enjoyed a lot less than I would have hoped too. Fortunately my other classes have been amazing and have completely made up for everything. But walking around in the sun has made me remember that there are other things in life than classes. I am definitely looking forward to break, and the next few weeks will be an...

Neat Google Trick

I just realized that Google can give definitions of words using define: word syntax. define: blog brings up the definition of what a weblog is. Though this service still has some quirks with varying search results (blog shows up, while weblog does not), it is quite useful. I should really read Google Hacks, a great book for finding other cool ways to making full use of all of Google's capabilities....

European Food

I have been trying to fall asleep for the last half hour but have been unable to. I have been thinking about all the amazing European food I could be having at home, which has kept me awake. I haven't had European food for almost two months now, and I don't know how much longer I can survive without it. I would love to have Pizza Cardinale or Pizza Salami, Pasta Carbonara, real bread with real butter on it, with...
