Advice for CS Group Projects
Some of these things might be obvious, but are often forgotten or disregard: Plan in the beginning Know what everyone else is doing Read the provided code Take a short break when you are stuck Do not procrastinate if you have free time, you will regret it later Team projects must usually be split, 3 people working at one computer, are slower than 3 people working individually Communication and Coordinating are crucial but will slow you down, plan accordingly Try...

Web Bloopers & Blog Design
I just watched a CS 547 talk by the author of Web Bloopers, Jeff Johnson on (not too surprisingly) Web Bloopers. The talk was very interesting, and Johnson went over a lot of common problems with many commercial websites. The talk itself is publicly available, and I encourage any professional web designer to watch it. Unfortunately, for people trying to design their own site, their is very little important information. My objective in watching it was to find out things...

Blender Blogs
I have been awake for 36 hours and am absolutely ready to go to sleep. My total sleep amount is now at 7 hours for 90 hours. This means I would have to sleep 23 hours to make up for it, but 14-15 hours should be enough for now. Bob, Josh and I spent several hours working on blogs for the Blender student incubator. We are going to have a project site for each group, that combines a blog, a...

CivilLiberties = CivilLiberties - 1;
According to this Guardian article the Blair government is proposing the introduction of random drug testing of students in British public schools. Let it be clear that I oppose any use of drugs and that I am also personally against drinking, but these things should really be of no concern in this matter. The fact is that random drug testing is a draconian measure, with little chance of achieving anything. Even worse, once again, I am disappointed and appalled by...

Operating Systems: A Reading Approach
I am currently designing a President's Scholar Research Project called A Reading Approach to Operating Systems. The project will mainly consist of reading the most influential and relevant books on Operating Systems and related topics and then writing a paper or giving a presentation about what I learnt. The books below are those that I have currently selected. If any of you have other suggestions or think that I should remove one of those books, please comment. Thanks for the...

Looking for a Cellphone
I am starting to think that having a cell phone here would be cheaper and more convenient than a land line. I would also really like to have a Java capable camera phone, so I can start Moblogging. I am looking for a small Ericsson or Nokia with triband, Bluetooth, and a good screen. I am also going to start blogging about mobile computing a lot more than I used to, because I have completely neglected my interest in cellphones...

Transparent Student Groups
Cross posted on the ISIS blog: I've been reading a lot about corporate blogging lately, and think that many of the issues raised there are very applicable to student groups. An increasing number of students is starting to question, what exactly groups are doing with their money. The recent special fees crisis just further illustrates this point. Getting members of student groups to blog might give students valuable insights into what those groups actually do. Right now it is almost...

Time Crunch at Stanford
The most difficult programming assignment I have ever had at Stanford is due this Sunday. I have a 7 page Archeology page paper due Friday. I need to do two problemsets, design 2 research projects, talk to Professors about the projects, and submit funding requests for those projects. I have a huge final Algorithms group project to start and finish. I need to apply for summer internships. Oh, and I have class every day. And this is one of the...

To Go To ConCon or Not
Today is the day of ConCon. Although I really want to go, I have lots of things to do, and I think it might be better if I stayed here and studied. This is quite a hard decision. I think I will get started on CS 161 and the see if it is easy enough for me to finish it on time and go....

Dashboard and Orkut
I was reading through this entry on Edd Dumbill's blog, and had an idea for the use of the Graph button in Dashboard. Right now I feel that displaying the graph of clue's might be interesting to look at, but is not particularly useful to a user. Replacing this with a graph of the relationship of the displayed person to other people you know, using input from social networking tools like Orkut would open many new possibilities. This led me...

iChatless in Stanford
I installed iChat AV 1.2 beta a few days ago and today it stopped working. Tristan is having similar issues so it's not just me. I am extremely annoyed and hope that it will work again soon. In better news, I got some awesome Thomas D songs today....

The Midterm of Pain
Today's CS 161 midterm was the hardest I have ever taken at Stanford. I know that the mean will not be too high, but that will definitely not enough to earn me a good grade. My main problem was that I did not have enough practice with the underlying Math, and understanding the actual algorithms did not help too much. Fortunately the midterm is only worth 15%, but I will have to start acing all the problemsets and ace the...

Trip to Los Trancos
On Sunday I took a trip to the Los Trancos state park as part of our ESYS 10 field trip. Los Trancos is located in the foothills above Stanford and offers an amazing view. It is also located right in the San Andreas fault which provided some amazing effects on nature and the landscape. Living in the foothills must be amazing, wood everywhere, with the most beautiful view of the valley. It is, however, almost scary how close Stanford is...

Faculty Night
Today we had Faculty Night with Mendel Rosenblum, my CS 140 professor and co-founder of VMWare. We talked about VMWare and OS research at Stanford, and it was quite interesting. I have been immensely enjoying CS 140, irrespective of the grade I will get, and am generally excited about Systems programming and Computer Science right now. I had my CS 140 midterm this morning and have CS 161 tomorrow. I also applied for several CURIS, summer research projects, we will...

The State of the Code
We "finished" CS 140 last night. Unfortunately we realized that we had a bug about an hour before it was due and did not have enough time to fix it. When NachOS runs out of memory, we crash instead of just having Exec return -1. This is incredibly stupid, but I hope that the grade will work out anyway, since this does not happen too often. I will probably fix this bug sometime today....

Code Dammit!
I have 23 hours till my Operating System project is due. I have to study for a midterm the majority of tomorrow, and want to go to a talk by Larry Page tomorrow as well. Though the code is crashing all over the place, I will not surrender. This assignment will show who is master, the machine or me....

Declaring Computer Science
I will officially declare Computer Science as my major today. This is of course only a formality, but a rather important one. Choosing an advisor, on the other hand, is an important issue that I thought about for the last few months. After long considerations, I decided to declare with Julie Zelinski. Julie was the first CS professor I took a class from at Stanford, and I have only heard good things about her and her advising group. Now comes...
