I am Air
In high school I had great disdain for electronic music, especially for the intellectual French electronica duo Air. I used to think that making electronic music is as simple as stringing together a few melodies made by others, and saving the entire thing as a file. People who called this high art annoyed me, and Air definitely fell in this group. The terrible quality of popular German Electronica did not help at all. I realized how wrong I was and...

Lost in Lost in Translation
I am currently Lost in Translation. I am, of course, speaking of the movie with Bill Murray and Scarrlett Johansson, by Sofia Coppola. It is about about Bob and Charlotte, two Americans who meet in Tokyo and become friends in this strange foreign city. Coppola paints an amazing picture of the city, and it's influence on the characters is the most fascinating part of the movie. Most scenes have long lapses of silence, where people stare around, unsure of what...

Printer Problems
For some reason my blue cartridge is not printing right now, which is quite annoying. I have been printing Black/White only lately, so I think that might have something to do with it. I was trying to print pictures from Monterey, which did not work out at all, I just got green trees with purple stripes all over the picture....

Brilliant Save
I assume that most of you have heard about Microsoft's plans to sue teenager Mike Rowe because of his domain name MikeRoweSoft.com. This was obviously a terrible idea from both an ethical and a marketing perspective. However, Microsoft's solution to this marketing dilemma shows a sense of humor they usually lack. Instead of settling for an obscenely large sum of money, (like the RIAA often does) Microsoft paid for all costs of the domain transfer and the registration of a...

GreatDonation
Today is an opportunity for every Stanford student to do some good. I am talking about GreatDonation, a petition to use an additional three dollars of ASSU money and donate them to beneficial organizations that will help people in the third world. Every year, students will be able to vote on which organization to donate to, and as usual, individuals can request refunds for this money. Unfortunately, it will require more signatures for this petition to pass, so I ask...

Assignment 1 Submitted
Yesterday Travis, Tristan and I submitted our first CS 140 assignment at 11:57. Though the assignment could have gone a bit better overall, we learned a lot. We will start the second assignment today. It is called User Programs and looks quite difficult. Before I can get started on it though, I will do some reading for Anth Sci 3 and watch CS 161 lectures....

Kudos to Myself
I want to use this opportunity to give kudos to myself, for fixing a bug in our CS 140 assignment. Right now I'm not sure if it works, but I hope it does. Still, I am happy....

Wordless Emotions
I used to think that having emotions without words to express them were completely useless. I though that people who cannot reason about their emotions cannot appreciate their own feelings. Last night, listening to Dido and looking at pictures of the beach on my desktop background I realized that I was completely wrong. Though words are one of the things that set us apart from animals, they are not the only one: Art, Music, and complicated Emotion are just as...

Election Ignorance
There used to be a time when I knew more about US politics than anyone I knew, when I knew the position and voting histories of all candidates and most senators, had read all the relevant campaign papers, had heard every detail. Now I feel completely ignorant about current events. I understand the fundamentals better than I ever did, but I don't know specifics anymore. This makes me feel strangely powerless. After the last US election I resigned myself to...

Worried about Work
Jasmine told me that I need to update the blog, and I agree. It has been a long time since I have updated this, and the same is true for most of the blogs I read. I have been overwhelmed with work this week, because I was on ski-trip for the weekend. I now have CS 140, CS 161, and ESYS 10 to do, and the former two are turning into a real problem. I am ahead on reading in...

CS 140 Has Begun
The first CS 140 assignment went out today, and things are looking better this time around. Travis finished most of part 1 (Alarm Clock) of the assignment, though we might have to do some refinement still. I will be going to see Return of the King tomorrow at noon, but will work on CS 140 in the morning, and try to get a good grasp of how to implement Join. I spent about an hour getting Tristan up-to-speed on the...

Inspiration Now Begins
As of now I am officially starting to be motivated and inspired again. This was mainly caused by Sedgewick being mentioned in CS 161 lecture. I went to his site and read this paper, and was suddenly inspired about CS again. I am looking forward to finally getting my 161 textbook on monday or Tuesday (the book was delayed)....
