Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

The last few days

The last few days have had some of the nicest weather I have ever seen at Stanford during winter quarter. The sun was shining outside while I was sitting in my room from Friday to Thursday. I got very little sleep, but "finished" 2 projects. My CS 161 project went OK, though there was a slight possibility of doing extremely well, at a time cost that I was not willing to commit. I think that it will hopeful go well anyway.
CS 140 took up incredible time and effort and in the end was quite a miserable failure. We had made great progress and I committed my final version at 11:20 to write design documentation. Unfortunately, the CVS merge somehow corrupted the program, and we had no time to fix it. We had to go with old backup files that had many output statements and did not nearly work as well as the final version. This also took away valuable time from writing documentation. I am very saddened by all of this, but it is just an assignment, and as disappointed as I am, there are more important things in life.
It is also the final reminder that backups are important (my own backups broke, because I apparently did not backup all files), and that we would have done fine, if everyone had backed up. It is sad to see that some of us still believe that it is not the effort, even after what happened yesterday. I for one have learned my lesson and will make a complete backup before every CVS merge. And I really need to learn more about CVS and about whether it is possible to revert to older CVS versions.
The sun is shining and it is the 12th, a wonderful day. I shall go outside and read a bit and then have lunch. Finals are coming up and I will study outside.
A follow up post to this will be coming up later today or early today. But I am starting to see that academics are not the only thing in life, as much as I enjoy them. I will be taking an activity quarter next quarter, and exercise more.
