Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

Changes

I'm changing my schedule. CS 140 is extremely hard, and I feel like I am not yet up to the job. I am taking a lot of other classes, and I think that it is too early for me to take it. Our team skills are not yet good enough yet, and we do not have enough system programming experience yet. Instead of CS 140 Travis and I are now taking CS 143 Compilers. The class interests me just as...

CS 140: Me and the Grad Students

CS 140 has started and it is not easy. The class is definitely not intended for most undergraduates. Although there are some seniors and juniors, the course mailing list is full of graduate students or SUN engineers looking for teammates. I think that my group will somehow survive, but it wont be an easy ride. Today I have been working on changing the scheduler from a simple Round Robin Scheduler to a preemptive priority based scheduler. This might sound very...

"Polly Want a Cracker" Internals: Perl 6 Parrot

A while ago I read Miguel de Icaza's analysis of Parrot's internals, and why some of their design decisions are not quite justified. Now let me first admit that I am in no way an expert on this topic. But I just found a great Introduction to Parrot Development that I will look through as soon as I feel better about the state of my CS 140 assignment. There is also an O'Reilly book on topic, which I will read...

How Many People Fit Inside MemAud?

Yesterday Flicks was more crowded than it had ever been before. They were showing the Matrix Reloaded, all freshmen went for the first time, and the Band was off alcohol probation. All these three things turned yesterday into the loudest and craziest Flicks that I had ever been to. There were some great jokes during the movie, and throwing newspapers was more fun than ever before, but the band quickly got very annoying. All the Loro people sat in the...

Work, Work, Work

Today I first started working on my CS 140 Threading assignment. I read the roadmaps and several papers and have been reading through code for the last few hours. For now we only have to look at synchronization, scheduling, threading, mailbox and thread switching classes, but there are still a lot of details to work out. Reading the code is great, and I mostly understand what's going on, but I am not yet sure what we have to do to...

Back at School and a 1000 Other Things

Much has happened since the last update. I am now writing this from CS 140 class, from Gates at Stanford. I failed my driver's license exam, but then got a permit to drive with my dad sitting next to me, and drove around a hundred miles in three days. I went to Turkey for 5 days, which was stressful but interesting. I now live in Naranja, Lagunita Court. All my classes seem very interesting, and though there is not that...

Two Days to Go!

My driving test will be this Wednesday, I have two lessons before I have to be ready for it. I had a practice test today, and drove quite well. Unfortunately I still made some small errors that would have barred me from passing, if it had been for real. I came to close to two parking cars because I failed to reduce my speed, and made a few other mistakes, mostly related to not looking ahead far enough. Tomorrow we...

Time's Online Edition Completely Overpriced

Today I wanted to read this article on Time Online. It seems that instead of offering everything for free they are now selling access to their articles. That by itself is not a problem, but the pricing is quite ridiculous. Reading just one article costs $2.50, regardless of its length. The article I wanted to read was 316 words long, and I wonder who would be willing to pay this much money for it, rather than just buying a paper...

Back Home

I have been back home for a week now, but there was little to blog. Nora and me were both studying for our theoretical driver's license exam, which we both passed today. Wednesday we will have our practical exam, which should be quite a bit harder. Yesterday there was a party at Babsi's place, and all my friends from high school, and some other people were there. I realized that I had missed some of my friends more than I...
