Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

Still in London

More updates from London. Fame on Monday was great, we both really enjoyed it, and our seats were pretty good, though they were really really high and we were a bit afraid of standing up when people tried to get to their seats because of that. Pirates of the Carribean was pretty good too, definitely a fun movie but not awe inspiring or anything. Yesterday we walked around Knightsbridge and Chelsea, two richer parts of London. We rode the Subway...

The Streets of London

The last night in Nimes was quite difficult. It turned out that a group of mentally and physically handicapped people had moved into the room next to us, with which we had a shared bathroom and shower. We did not really mind that the shower was occupied for more than an hour, and that we heard loud screaming, which was a bit disturbing. But afterwards we saw that someone had removed to the door to the shower/bathroom, without even informing...

A Nice and Quiet Day in Nimes

Today was pretty uneventful but still nice. First of all my e-mail account was spammed for the first time, but I guess nowadays that is pretty standard, and OSX Mail and Stanford filter pretty nicely, so everything should be fine. To all you Stanford people, how much spam do you get? I've been reading up on Loro RPG Mafia, and it looks like so much fun. Sara did a great job of organizing it, and I hope they are going...

A Quick Trip to Montpellier

We took the TGV to Montpellier this morning, which took 25 minutes. It was very different from Nimes, starting with the large number of tourists. Most of the people that passed by us spoke a language other than French, which does not happen much in Nimes outside the youth hostel. The weather was hot as usual, but we walked very far anyway. Montpellier's proximity to the Cote 'd Azur was definitely apparent - the entire place was full of palm...

This is a Lot Better

Nimes definitely is a better place than Roanne. If you are thinking about going to either of the two, choose Nimes. Yesterday evening we were taken to the youth hostel by some crazy french dude who looked like Tom Fullner, that asked us if we wanted to hitch hike to the hostel (500 meters up a hill). We decided to go because he was accompanied by a young woman and seemed pretty friendly. He took us to the hostel up...

From Paris to Roanne

Be informed that the last days in Paris were great. The last day was a bit cooler and we managed to stay out all day, and the day we left we went to the Sacre Coeur in the morning before leaving for the train. The train ride was nice with no major events. Roanne was quite different than Paris. We arrived late and all the shops were already closed, so we went to McDonalds. The next day was a holiday...

This is Starting to get Old: The Paris Heat

I am blogging this from a keyboard that is mostly normal, with a few notable exceptions, that are making it difficult to type. Please excuse any stupid spelling mistakes, they are probably not my fault. The last three days have been incredibly hot. Two days ago we reached a maximum temperature of 39 Degrees Celsius, which is the record for at least the last 10 years. Because of the heat it has been impossible to spend the entire day outside,...

That Paris is So Hot Right Now

I hope that at least one person who reads this blog got the Zoolander reference in the headline. It does not refer to my cousin, whose name also happens to be Paris, but to the city I'm currently in. It is soooooo hot, yesterday it was 38 degrees Celsius, which is definitely a record for this part of Europe. Today was more acceptable at around 34 degrees, but still really hot. To get Fahrenheit from that, multiply by 1,8 and...

Leaving for Paris Tomorrow

We finally managed to go to Mont St. Michel today, and it was quite an experience. First of all let me say that it reminded me of Minas Mirth (or Minas Morgul?) or whatever else the mountain that Gondor was located on in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was killed. My theory is that Tolkien was definitely influenced by this mountain. Anyway, the weather was foggy at first and there were hundreds of people trying to push...

Hot & Cold - A Tale of Two Days

Yesterday Nora and I decided to stay in Dinan, because we were too exhausted from our trip to St. Malo. That turned out to be an excellent idea, because as soon as we arrived near the cathedral of Dinan (the top of the hill on which Dinan is located) the temperature got so high that even sitting in the shade was unbearable because of the terribly hot wind. We bought salad, cheese, salami and baguette and had a wonderful self-made...

A Hot Day in St. Malo

Today was an unbearably hot day. We got up early and then walked to the bus station for 40 minutes. We had to hurry, because the walk was a lot longer than expected. The bus ride was about an hour long, but we both enjoyed watching the scenery. St. Malo has a nice historical city center, that is surrounded by thick walls and located right at the ocean. Today there was market day and the entire town looked like one...

Blogging from Dinan, France

Hello World! I am writing this with a keyboard that is causing me considerable difficulty: Instead of qwerty, this is a "azerty" keyboard where every button is confusing. We arrived in Stansted, England yesterday and stayed in a Bed & Breakfast, that was in a 15th century farmhouse. We took a 5 mile walk to the nearest city, Bishops Stortford, where we bought food. We were so exhausted we had to take the bus back. We flew to Dinard this...

A Month in France and a Ton of News

First of all, I came back from East Germany on Sunday and I'm leaving for France tomorrow. I will sometimes have Web access there, but not all the time, so updates will be sporadic, but definitely very interesting. This will be a long entry, but I am not going to split it due to time constraints. The Weekend in Erfurt, Germany I spent Thursday of last week on three different trains to Erfurt. The Austrian one was definitely the worst...

Hydra 1.1.1 Featuring HTML Preview

This is mainly for you HTML monkeys out there. TheCodingMonkeys recently released a new version of Hydra that includes a new feature called Web Preview. Web Preview uses the Safari rendering engine to render an HTML file you are editing, and updates the changes automatically, or upon saving - you choose. This means that it is no possible to see every change made to an HTML document without using a cumbersome WYSISYG HTML editor like Frontpage. I will definitely use...
