Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

Walking in the 'Innenstadt'

Today was quite a relaxed day where I got quite a bit of reading done (TCP/IP Illustrated: Volume 1), went swimming, and cooked Spaghetti Carbonara for Nora. Afterwards we went to the Vienna 'Innenstadt' which translates to inner city, but in reality is the old historical part of the city, rather than the run down dangerous part, like in American cities. I hadn't been there for quite a while, and seeing the city again was great. What I especially liked,...

Driving 10 Meters in a Convertible

So today I drove the first ten meters in a car ever. For some weird reason my dad totally forgot the fact that he was in any way attached to his car, and let me drive it, with him sitting in passenger seat. I have never even turned on the engine off a car, so learning how to shift gears, while starting the engine, without killing it off were quite difficult at first. My total drive distance was only about...

Musings on the WWDC - Good Times Ahead

First of all iChat 2 is great news, because video conferencing was the only feature I was missing from my Mac. I do, however, hope that it will be compatible with some Windows application, so that I can communicate with windows users. After some deliberation on future acquisitions, I stand by my decision to buy a 20" display next year. I just hope that the Euro gets stronger again, and that prices on displays drop slightly before next September/October. Now...

Bend it like Beckham, Battle Royal and a Broken DVD Player

For all you second floor Lorons, I finally gave in to the pressure and watched Bend it like Beckham. I have to agree, it is in fact not a documentary. I thought the movie was great, fun to watch, and defintely one of the best comedies I have seen lately. Although I don't think that David Beckham is a good soccer player, and wasn't initerested in the Indian culture part too much, I very much enjoyed the entire Shakespearean comedy...

From Unix Programming Reading to Understanding TCP/IP

I've been making good progress with Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment, but after 510 pages I really needed a break. The only part of the book that is left is the 4 large programming examples, that span 140 pages, but I need something else to do, before starting those. Because of that I started reading TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1, another great book by Richard Stevens. My plan is to read around 70 pages and then finish the Unix book,...

Take That gxx_personality_v0 - Now It's Preview.app

Thanks to Tristán I realized why I was getting the weird linker error. It turns out that writing systems code from Hydra is not the best thing to do, because the linker doesn't handle some part of the resulting files correctly (probably the line endings). This means that I have to write stuff in emacs, and that I should consider using the Apple XWindow client instead of Terminal.app. Hm..... In other news Preview.app has stopped working for no reason. Tristan...

Javascript Entry Expansion and other Site Changes

While randomly searching for Movabletype extensions I came upon a site called [the girlie matters] which is one huge colelction of javascript, csss, html, movabletype,.... tricks. I found a great script that makes it possible to expand and collapse entries from the main index, which I immideately integrated into my site. Even though this entry is to short for it to be useful, I will demonstrate it anyway. Click expand to read on....

Integrating Moveabletype and Gallery

It looks like I am going to use Gallery for my picture page. It seems pretty simple to install, but integrating it with Movabletype might be a bit harder. Fortunately I found a tutorial on how to do it, but it still promises to be a lot of busy work. I guess I will start with the projects page first, because it is a lot easier to do....

Some Things I Believe In

I made this a lot shorter, because I didn't want to ramble on for too long. Yesterday quite a few people got mad at me for various reasons. I believe that people should have opinions about things and believe in those. I beleve that people should question those opinions and beliefs, and have them questioned by others, in order to possibly improve them or be strenghtened in them. I believe that such discussions should be civil, and that I often...

gxx_personality_v0aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

I wrote some short code using Unix system calls for Mac OS X and tried to compile them and got a linker error saying ld: gxx_personality_v0 . I tried to compile some of Michael's code, without any luck. If anyone out there has any clue what might be causing this, please help. For now, I cannot use any Unix system calls in my code, which makes it really really hard to learn unix C programming....

Reading Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment

Today I started reading Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment by Richard Stevens, which is a great and interesting book. For now I'm only up to the chapter on files and directories, having read the chapter on standard I/O, and am looking forward to the more advanced chapters. In a few days I'll be ready to look into the source of Michael's webserver mhttpd....

Back To School

I visited my old high school/middle school today. It was a weird experience, mainly because it was the last day of finals for seniors and everyone was busy. I met the headmaster and my old head teacher and they were both excited to see me, but didn't have that much time. They invited me to the graduation ceremony tomorrow, to talk to all my old teachers afterwards, or maybe even give a speech, but it still seemed like something was...

Taking The Red Pill

A very interesting read for every Matrix fan. Like most of the Matrix books, it is a collection of essays by different authors, most of which are quite well known in their particular fields. I had already read the last chapter, which can be found at www.simulation-argument.com, and Why The Future Doesn't Need Us by Bill Joy, but still enjoyed reading them again. The chapter on finding god in the Matrix was enlightening, but also amazingly boring, mainly because the...

New Design!

So as promised, here is the new design for my blog. It's still not finished, but it's a lot nicer than what I had before. This is the first time I have used CSS in 2 years, so I'm naturally proud of it. Be beware, however, that none of the tab links work yet, but I will deal with that very soon....

You Guys are Great!

The world should know that I have the coolest friends on earth! Today at six pm, after a long allnighter and lots of fun (yeah Denny's) I was finally ready to leave for Vienna and finally see Nora again. I figured I would say goodbye to everyone, but boy was I wrong. Everyone just followed me to the shuttle, took pictures, hugged me and was really really nice. Great kudos to Jasmine, the Erics, the Kats (one with long hair...

Blogging From The Airport

I might be paying money, but this wireless at the airport thing is great and cheaper than using my cell phone. I checked in all my luggage, without any problems, even though it was really heavy. I am now sitting at a wireless hotspot browsing the web and waiting, till people come back from dinner. Once wireless acess becomes even more widespread, devices get smaller, and prices drop a little, great things are going to happen. IMing people all the...

Crazyness, Friendship & Leaving

The last few days were pretty crazy. I stayed up longer than I should a lot, went running at 3am and learned more about some people then was comfortable to know. But that's what living life is about and I am really happy. In two days I will see Nora, and I am so looking forward to it. My friends in Austria are apparently doing crazy stuff, I learned very unexpected things about 2 of them, some of which might...

Lots of Events & Lots of Studying

I have not been posting lately because some things have happened to some of my friends and I was not sure whether I should write about them. I also have tons of work to do, but Lora complained about the outdatedness of my blog. This blog has always been veering between technical and personal postings and I have finally come to the conclusion that I will leave both of them in here. I might at some time in the future...

Mafia Site

Sara had the great idea to start an online Mafia community. We will all get together in a group and discuss what it should be capable of, and then I will build the site. We will need some modified CGI Message Board and Polls, plus a few custom scripts. I will then combine those seperate elements into one nice site. I probably won't have much time to play, but building it should still be a fun excercise. Please leave comments...

Finals

It's 40 minutes before my CS 107 final. I finished IHUM this morning at 5 and after this I don't have anything till Wednesday morning. I will update the weblog as soon as I come back from the final. I sent an email to Xanga today, because many of my friends use it, and their RSS is broken. Because of this I cannot view it in NetNewsWire. I know that Xanga's RSS is still experimental, but making RSS validate is...

Why am I so happy?

For some reason I am really really happy right now. There are various reasons for this. Finished 2 Problemsets/Programs First of all I finished both a CS 107 LISP Program, and a CS 103B Problemset. Though the former was giving me lots of troubles, I found LISP to be fascinating, and will study it further before next year (probably the same for Python and ML, which we are covering tomorrow). Turing Machines (103B) are very interesting and fun, I'm very...

Time for a new Style Sheet

After I finish finals I will finally take the time to improve the design of my weblog, add links, write my own CSS, adhere to accessibility guidelines, and start updating it more often. I really like blogging, especially now that most of my friends have blogs. I need to find out on how to write Moveable type templates, that read from a file, because I want to have file of links to blogs. This is very easy to do without...

Feynman's Rainbow: A Search for Beauty in Physics and in Life

This was an OK book, that had some very interesting sections. Most of the explanations about Feynman's research are very superficial, and are targeted at people who do not know much physics. There is quite a bit of depth about the interaction between Murray Gell-Mann and Feynman, which I found very interesting. The fundamental question of the book was, however, how to find out what to do with one's life, and how to make it interesting and worthwile. There is...
