CS 107, The Matrix, and Other Things.
The last few days I have mostly been doing work for classes. The CS 107 midterm will be tomorrow, and it will be extremely hard. For now, I have not been able to study too much. I must concentrate this evening and tomorrow, if I want a good grade. We watched The Matrix Trailer in CS 197 today, so I had to leave, because I did not want the spoilers. I talked to Tristan today; apparently Gavilan is organizing a...

Personal Flying Machines
This is a response to Professor John McCarthys essay on Personal Flying Machines for my CS 22 N class, taught by him. There are several important issues raised by the possibility of building Personal Flying Machines, and they can roughly be divided into 2 categories: Technological Challenges and Social Implications....

I'm Writing a Game AI!
Tristan was intrigued by the idea of me writing the AI for the computer player of his game, and I will probably start this weekend. Dylan, who took CS 221 (AI for AI people), gave us some good suggestions on how to do it, and I will talk to John McCarthy about it too. We will have to play the game a LOT to learn good winning strategies, and know what the computer should consider in his move evaluations. Once...

iTunes 4, Music Service, iPods
Apple released lots of cool new music stuff today, and I'll cover all of it. Let's start with the iPod. Good to have 30GB models now, 20 was too little for me to consider buying one. The same goes for upgrading to a 15GB and 10GB model. The design is very elegant and the docking station is great. Now the iPod can really be something that you connect to your computer easily and then just take with you, without any...

Userfriendly is funny again.
I hadn't read Userfriendly in a long time, which was very unfortunate. As of today, I'm will read it again daily, and so should you. I will add it to my link section, together with other sites, but for today I have some links to the funniest one's: The Matrix Coke & RIAA Schrödinger's Cat If you have never seen Userfriendly, you should take a look at it. It is a comic about a small ISP, and is for anyone...

Bloggig Workshop
Lora, who lives next door to me, will be an RCC next year, and she offered me to give a workshop on Weblogging in her dorm next year. Although I will not be able to teach the course on it next quarter, because I missed the deadline. I can probably teach it in winter. I am really excited about how fast weblogging is taking off for me. Although I don't have too many readers yet, I feel like I am...

Safari gets Spellchecking for Text Fields
Since I started the blog, I felt that spell checking for text fields has to be simpler. Apparently, Safari now supports this, making me think about whether to use it more often. I still very much like Chimera, and I don't want to ditch this great Open Source app, because most of my software is already from Apple. Hm.......

File Backup Epiphany
I just found this on bbum's rants, code & references: Yeah, yeah, the real unix admins make backups of any file they're going to delete. And if they're just testing, they don't actually delete the file, they just move it or rename it. I, on the other hand, am still waking up and got a tad enthusiastic. I will definitely create a Backup folder on my Desktop now, and copy anything I delete or edit there, in case I make...

Computer Game with Cocoa
My friend Tristan is working on a game using Cocoa. He has been working on it for 2-3 weeks and he is making great progress. It's amazing how fast programs can be developed, considering that Tristan does not spend too many hours a week writing it. The game allows playing over Rendezvous, connections over the net and local game play. Right now the biggest missing feature is the computer opponent....

CS 197 Final Project
I have to do a small (tiny) final project for CS 197: Unix Mainframe Consulting, and even though it is not even assigned yet (it will be in about a month), I just feel like starting it soon, because I have a nice idea. Apparently lots of people have problems with uploading text files onto the Solaris machines, and then not being able to view them correctly because of line ending issues. My program will help people with this....

Hydra, great for teamwork.
Since a week or so, i have been using Hydra. Hydra allows many people to work on the same document at the same time. This is great for taking collective notes, discussing and editing papers, and writing and editing programs. Hydra supports Rendezvous, as well as tradtional connections over the web, and spouts a nice and clean interface. It can highlight text by different users in different colors, to better distinguish them, and also supports syntax highliting for many languages....

Alan Kay's Mindblowing Croquet
Alan Kay, one of the main people behind the Xerox Alto PC and the Smalltalk programming language gave a talk about his new project Croquet. To make it short, croquet is just incredibly amazing. Croquet is a breathtaking 3D world, in which users collaborate, but it is also a "a complete development and delivery platform for doing real collaborative work. There is no distinction between the user environment and the development environment." This means that users can make changes to...

The ProFros are loose!
I never went to my own admit weekend, so I was definitely looking forward to this year's. I was at first quit a bit dissapointed, because everything seemed so anticlimatic, but by now I know that admit weekend is a lot more fun for ProFro's than for anyone else. My personal impression of some of the ProFros is that they are quiet smart, though harder to get to know them than other students. It seems odd to not be the...
