Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

Starting on CS 140 Reading

After I finished the Bach book (a review will follow some time today), it is now time to start reading the lecture notes, which does not appear to be too much work. It's been quite some time since I read the text book for the class (2 years), and I have an older edition, so I will have to redo some of that work. But most of my CS 140 preparation will now consist of reading Nachos code and playing around with it.
CS 140 will definitely be the hardest and most work intensive class of my next quarter. Me and Travis are still looking for a third person for the group programming projects, so if you are an intense Stanford CS student taking 140 next quarter, please email me.
My other classes will probably be E40: Introduction to Electronics, CS 147: Human Computer Interaction, and CS 242: Programming Language Design

Yeah, I really have to get started on Nachos; I think I'll read the roadmap today.

Can!! You need to branch out more, buddy. And don't kill yourself with a heavy class load. I mean, yes, CS is the greatest thing on the planet (except for possibly Mechanical Engineering), but there's other equally interesting subjects. Like FemStudies 101, or ME 101, or SlavGen154 (Film and Propaganda: Soviet and German Film in the 1930s). Branch out!

I agree with Lora. I mean, I know you want to coterm in 4 years and all, but you could still take some fun fuzziness or an introsem or something. You can learn CS stuff very easily when you need it for a job out of college, but if you don't explore other subjects now, you may not ever get around to it. And - if you think that every CS person has to know all these things, don't forget how you also thought every Stanford student has to get perfect grades, SAT scores, SAT II scores, etc. You might not actually need to learn Everything. However, I'll admit that HCI is Awesome.
By the way, do you know of any good Turkish newspapers? The advice for Austria was very helpful, thanks. (Die Presse has English)

P.S. We better have lots and lots of Loro reunions next year!

Good Turkish Newspapers are Hurriyet, Milliyet, and Cumhuriyet. Might I ask why you need them? Do you actually read them every day?

Please don't worry that I'm focusing on CS too much. I'll be spending the next month in France reading Spanish literature on the train, which is very non CS. And I will probably take another fuzzy class next quarter. But next year will mostly be the year of CS, so that I can do projects and other stuff after that (I need a lot of prereqs for that).
In addition to my CS classes I will also be taking ESYS 10, one or two Intro Sems (I already have 3), and probably Philosopy 101.
