Musings on the WWDC - Good Times Ahead
First of all iChat 2 is great news, because video conferencing was the only feature I was missing from my Mac. I do, however, hope that it will be compatible with some Windows application, so that I can communicate with windows users. After some deliberation on future acquisitions, I stand by my decision to buy a 20" display next year. I just hope that the Euro gets stronger again, and that prices on displays drop slightly before next September/October. Now on to some individual musings about everything that's new.
- Safari 1.0
- Although I am not a Safari user, I will update my copy of Safari immediately. Safari has some great advantages over Camino, mainly spellchecking, Rendezvous bookmarks, and the simplicity of its bookmark system. Pop-up blocking also works better than in Camino. For the majority of Mac users, this should be the new standard brower.
- Powermac G5
- The Powerbmac anouncement is the best Mac news in a long time. If there was anything the Mac needed it was a processor, that could compete with Desktop PCs. Now with the G5, we finally have the right processor. I wonder if these new machines will really reach the 3 Ghz by next year, if so, two of them in one machine will work wonders.
- Panther
- Panther is a nice update. Expose seems extremely usefully, for people with clutted desktops. Having a better SMB browser is important in a dorm environment, and the added polish is also nice. I am really looking forward to the new Preview.app, since my current one is broken. I am also excited about the new encryption features, though I'm not really sure what I might need them for.
- iSight
- Although it is, at 149$, too expensive to buy after buying a new camera last year, I must admit this I the nicest webcam that I have yet seen. Not only is the quality impeccable, but fixing it it to the screen is the best way of using a webcam. My real question is whether it supports the Cinema Displays and the 15" TiBook. My guess is that it doesn't, and that we will soon (November?) new 15" TiBooks, with possible new processors, and a case design that will resemble the 12" and 17" and will allow attaching the camera.
What an exciting week.
