Welcome to the blog of Can Sar, a Stanford CS major. This blog is made up of my thoughts on Computer Science and the computer industry, as well as ever exciting tales from my life.

From Unix Programming Reading to Understanding TCP/IP

I've been making good progress with Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment, but after 510 pages I really needed a break. The only part of the book that is left is the 4 large programming examples, that span 140 pages, but I need something else to do, before starting those. Because of that I started reading TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1, another great book by Richard Stevens. My plan is to read around 70 pages and then finish the Unix book, before continuing with TCP/IP. Once I'm finished with this volume I'll read up on a bit of Unix Networking (maybe even buy my 2 missing Stevens books) and then start doing some coding. I know TCP/IP quite well, but this book will definitely improve my knowledge. After doing some programming, I will probably read Volume 3, about some of the application protocols, write some more code, before finally going to Volume 2, Implementation.

After that doing some low level TCP/IP / Unix programming would be a great goal for July. If I finish all the Stevens books, do the planned programming, and read the Minix book and Bach (on the train to Germany), I'll be really really really happy. My plan for September would be Nachos programming, the reading/studying for Fall quarter and hopefully my driver's license. August will be spent in France with Nora :-)
