My Valley plans fell through when Dennis Strom broke his hand, so I joined the Pinnacles trail crew on Sunday for a good roasting below Machete Ridge. We fenced and "signed" off several eroding trails below Destiny, and worked to prepare a new one that comes up below Alias Bandit Bench and Bandits in Bondage, then contours right to join the current trail. This section will see future work. The upper section was completed -- it avoids the direct hillside below Son of Dawn Wall, and instead makes a big switchback out right on old game trails, coming back right at the base of Son of Dawn Wall. We = NPS climbing ranger Dan Habig, trail crew chief Lisa _____, FoP board members Brooks White and Anne Russell, older guys Bob and Brick, and me. Toting the big loads around and wrestling with the spool of fence wire was a bit of a burnout. Incidentally, the new fence material is more transparent than the old stuff, so it's nicer- looking. Dan also told me about a rappelling accident from Alias B.B. anchors (2 brothers tried to go straight down with just one rope; a midway anchor was improvised from a knob when one brother sat on the rope as the other rapped, but with nobody to sit on it for him, he took a 50-footer, not dying, but getting pretty messed up). Actual climbing: I was bushed after the trail work, but I dunked my head in the creek and started to feel a little better. During the day, I had met Frank, an Austrian guy on a big road trip, so we went out and he led Mission Impossible 5.10b and Peon's Delight 5.10a (has 6 bolts for leading now). Of course these were in the shade, and a nice breeze was blowing, so we had fun. Clint
