Pinnacles: Voyeur, Hot Lava, Rocket in My Pocket 2/16/91 On Saturday, John Novat and I started by warming up on Voyeur 5.8+ **, which is just left of Scorpion (between Monolith and Discovery Wall). It features many nice square-cut knobs, 3 bolts, 1 pin (back up with #1.5 Friend), and an actual 2-bolt belay/rappel anchor 50' up. Then we fired the Monolith Regular Route, after which I rappelled down a proposed new route between Hot Lava Lucy and Piton Traverse Direct. The mellow vertical part above the corner would be 5.11, but the rather overhanging corner and wall below have long semi-blank sections, so I realized it was beyond me and best left to somebody who might have a chance on it. The start is also on a very fragile layer. Too bad. Next, we met up with Dave Wood, and we did Hawaiian Noises 5.10b (c/d if you're short; John had some hangs at the crux, but did a good job). On to Cantaloupe Death 5.10c; John didn't have much luck with the initial pulls; Dave took 2 laps. I TRed the top part of Hot Lava Lucy (~ 5.11d for me) by stepping across to start at the second bolt. Maybe next time I'll give it a real try from the ground. Dave (5'7") could not reach the good holds this way. Next, we TRed Rocket in My Pocket 5.10c. Stuff has broken off at the start and above the 2nd bolt. John didn't get very high. Dave pumped out above the second bolt. I managed to crank it, but noticed that my way was out of range for clipping the 3rd bolt.... I also tried to TR Future Shock 5.12b, but I managed only a degrading dog-a-thon (~7 hangs). It's hard to believe that on my previous try (last year) I only took 1 hang and thought it was only 5.11d. Everybody got a good workout; for me this was a pleasant surprise, as my arms had felt slightly tender after Cityrock on Tuesday.
