Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 11:11:03 -0700 Subject: Conduit to the Cosmos completed From: Jim McConachie Hi Guys, John Barbella joined me on Saturday to complete the third pitch of Conduit to the Cosmos 20 years after we started the first. Temps were in the high nineties (I ended up with blisters on the ends of my toes) and some of the hold were too hot to touch on the first pitch. Route went into the shade in the early afternoon so we were able to carry on with a few head-rushes here and there. Third pitch has eleven bolts in 115 feet to a two stainless steel bolt and hanger belay with slings and rap rings. 5.11 to the 4th bolt, then A1 with stick clip or A4+ (technical dif) with hooks for 15 or so feet past 3 bolts, and 5.10 for the remaining 60 feet. Third pitch credits go to Karl, Jon and Bill McConachie in addition to John Barbella for helping during the five days of effort spread over the past 14 years. Unfortunately, we did not have time to replace any of the first pitch bolts. ... They still look in decent shape but are mostly 3/8 rawl split shafts with homemade, galvanized angle iron hangers. Just don't fall! ... Best to you, Jim
