Last Friday, September 15, I did a little bit of rebolting work on "Ranger Bolts" (5.13a or A1) on the Monolith at Pinnacles National Monument. Gina Tan and I did the aid version since we were preparing for the hanging belays on the "West Face" of Leaning Tower in Yosemite. I added two belay bolts at the starting ledge of the aid route because this location does not have good natural protection. A leader fall could pull the belayer horizontally off of the belay ledge causing the belayer to fall 30 ft into a cave below. One belay bolt is a Rawl 6-piece 3/8" x 3-1/2" and the other belay bolt is a Rawl 6-piece 3/8" x 2-1/4". Both hangers are Kong S.S. hangers. At the very top of this climb, I replaced two Leeper hangers at the belay with Kong S.S. hangers. I used the existing Rawl 6-piece 3/8" x3-1/2" bolts when I replaced the hangers. There is also a 3/8" buttonhead hangerless bolt at this very top belay. The first three bolts at the traversing bottom of the aid climb are 1/4" bolts which are in very poor shape, especially the last one. Next time I do this climb, I will replace these three bolts. Perhaps I will replace some of the aid bolts on the first and second pitch where the aid and free climb merge, but most of the aid bolts are in fairly good shape. The three bolts above the second belay station are in very poor shape and will be replaced next time I do this climb. Two of these bolts are 1/4" diameter bolts that are sticking out 1/4" to 1/2" from the wall. I probably could have pulled out the last bolt from the rock with my fingers. Bolts Removed (so far): 0, Bolts Placed (so far): 2, Hangers Replaced (so far): 2 Mark A. Fletcher and Gina Tan, 9/15/00
