Leader Fall injury - Discovery Wall
In 1989, a climber was leading Trauma on Discovery Wall.
He took a leader fall, and most of the protection pulled,
creating what is called a "zipper" fall.
I don't know exactly what his injuries were, but one
would expect extensive scrapes and bruises at a minimum.
Analysis
Trauma is not a route for beginning leaders. It has extremely
loose rock down low, and higher up it is still difficult for
experienced climbers to place solid protection.
There is a tunnel in the rock about
halfway up the main corner (right about where the rock starts
to get less loose) which can be threaded with a
long (double length) sling to prevent a ground fall if protection
above pulls.
See the description of the nearby "Zippety-Do-Dah" route
in the Rubine guidebook.
