Calaveras Domes rock climbing
These are some selected topos which mostly cover routes not in the
Harlin guide (The Climber's Guide to North America:
West Coast Rock Climbs, by John Harlin III, Chockstone Press, Denver, CO,
1984 - later edition also, ISBN 0-9609452-2-9).
Most of the topos above were made in about 1983. I'm not sure who
drew them originally, but recently I've heard they may have been
made by Jay Smith.
I updated the Time Traveler topo in 1989, after I did the route.
As of 2008, these all display and print easily; they are either PDF
or GIF format.
Updates:
- 1/08: Bad Company info from Al Swanson, PDF format for larger topos
- 8/04: info from Dennis Nousaine
- 12/02: info from John Scott and Jim McConachie
- 10/02: used topos from Ron Felton which include
many routes not in the 1983 topos.
I may update the topos further, to show all the known routes.

Upcoming Guidebook
Will Cottrell is preparing a guidebook, Rock Climbs of Calaveras
Domes, which he planned to release in Spring 2001. After the
article in Climbing magazine, lots of new information surfaced,
and he has been working on verifying it. If you have new information,
he can be contacted at
whcmd@tahoebone.com
[note new email address, 6/2009].
In the meantime, some topos can be found in Climbing #194, and
the older guidebook West Coast Rock Climbs by John Harlin
contains topos and photos of the older routes.
You can also obtain prerelease topos from Will Cottrell:
"To meet needs of climbers we sell online
"Calaveras Select" packages. We customize packages to skill
level and experience -- next best thing to having a "local" guide. We ship
PDF files of 8.5x11" topos and route descriptions, suggestions, etc. Cost
is about one dollar a page. Average cost 15-20$. We need to know grade and
difficulty, and crack or slab. Climbs are mainly trad with exception of
Hidden Wall. We have a nice selection of grade IVs which can be rappeled.
Also need to know how long climbers wishes to spend in Calaveras and the
approximate time. We also take season and temperature into account. Please
give some lead time to make the best package for the trip. They have been
popular and take several hours to prepare and email."
