Other Climbing Guidebooks for the
San Francisco Bay Region
The scope of these guidebooks is roughly any area which is
close enough for a day trip (up to roughly 2 hours' drive each way)
for climbers who live in the Bay Area. This scope is borrowed
from Jim Thornburg's guide, which includes Consumnes River
(near Placerville) and Table Mountain (near Jamestown).
The Pinnacles National Monument is clearly within this range.
Donner Summit and even Yosemite Valley may be as well.
Current Guidebooks
- Black, Tresa,
Rock Climbing the San Francisco Bay Area,
Falcon Guide, Globe Pequot Press, 2002, 230 pages.
Em Holland highly recommends this book... besides having more
routes than Thornburg's, it has great photos and
geology information on all the areas.
- Cottrell, William H.,
Rock Climbs of Consumnes River Gorge
, 1997. 1-8911190-3-6
This guide is probably more complete for Consumnes.
However, Thornburg's guide may be more than enough for one or
two visits to the area.
- Morris, Bruce,
Rock Climber's Guide to Skyline Boulevard
, 4/2000. $20 at REI.
Probably the most complete guide for the Castle Rock areas.
- Rubine, David,
Climber's Guide to Pinnacles National Monument (second edition)
, 1995.
The Pinnacles is one of the best spots for winter day
trips - the best chance for dry and sunny climbing, relatively
long pitches, and a large number of climbs.
- Summit, Chris,
Wine Country Rocks 2005
150 routes + topropes, 420 boulder problems
summitorplummet.com
- Thornburg, Jim,
Climber's Guide to Bay Area Rock
, Spring 2001, Potlicker Press. $18 at REI.
This edition of Thornburg's guide is excellent; very
much improved over his earlier editions. It includes
nice bouldering info with V ratings for many areas (including
Berkeley and Castle Rock), some new areas not in Jensen's
guide, updated topos for Mickey's beach, topos for Mt. St. Helena,
a large number of Jim's excellent action photos, and a great
sense of humor in some of the route descriptions.
There is still some room for improvement. Some of his
maps and topos could be made closer to scale, and it would be
nice if the topos had ratings drawn in.
- Young, Brad, Hope Wolf, and Jim Lundeen,
Climber's Guide to Sonora Pass Highway
, 2001. $14, in lots of shops and gyms from Santa Cruz to Livermore
and Sonora. Should be at REI soon.
This guide has the best topos and maps for Table Mountain
(The Grotto, The Fissures, etc.).
It also includes many interesting granite areas along highway 108
to Sonora Pass.
Older Guidebooks

Grizzly Caves (Grizzly Peak Rocks)
Summit, November 1964

- Jensen, Marc,
Bouldering, Buildering and Climbing in the San Francisco Bay Region

The maps and topos in this guide are nicely to scale. They
are just slightly outdated in some cases by those in the Thornburg
guide.

The Pinnacles National Monument has had several guidebooks:
- Rubine, David, (first edition), 1991.
- Crowell, William S. III,
Climbing with Condor's
, 1990.
A complete guide, entirely handwritten.
Only a few copies were printed. It included most
of the non-existent routes claimed by Jonathan Richards.
- Richards, Jonathan, 1989.
This unusual booklet included only
a few areas and had several non-existent climbs.
- Gagner, Paul, 1982.
- Richards, Chuck, 1974.
- Roper, Steve, 1966.
- Hammack, David, 1955.
