The levels of population are taken from Kremer (1993 QJE), who in turn
takes his data from various sources.  Two changes relative to the data
below are made in the paper (the years corresponding to these changes
are marked with an asterisk *).  First, the year 1 A.D. is set equal to
the year 0.  Second, the population in 1990 is used for the population
in the year 2000. These changes are made so that the period length in
the model can be set equal to 25 years.
