Stanford Alpine Club - Intro Climbing Trip

Stanford Alpine Club - Intro Climbing class

April 8 or 9

Castle Rock State Park

[UPDATE (05/04/06): The postponed class will take place this weekend (May 6 or 7). For details contact Ben Emery (bemery@stanford) or Bjorn Flatt (flatt@stanford). Have fun!]

UPDATE (04/09/06): Although the class was cancelled because of rain on Friday and even possibly today (Sunday), Ben Emery has graciously agreed to take over the course with another SAC instructor a different weekend (since my schedule for the rest of the quarter is already full). If you have any questions, you can e-mail Ben (bemery at stanford.edu) about when the postponed class will take place. Thanks again and hope to see you on other trips with the Alpine Club!

[UPDATE (04/05/06): Weather forecast for Saratoga, CA
Wed Apr 5 - Showers - 59/43 - 40% chance of precipitation
Thu Apr 6 - Mostly Cloudy - 65/47 - 10%
Fri Apr 7 - PM Showers 64/46 - 30%
Sat Apr 8 - Few Showers 63/46 - 30%
Sun Apr 9 - Few Showers 60/44 - 30%

Friday night session is at the gym at 8p.]

[UPDATE (04/03/06): For the first 6-8 people who e-mailed me about coming on this trip, I'll send an e-mail to you tomorrow (Tuesday). If you still can make it that's great; if not, I'll keep going down the list until the spots fill up. NOTE: SUNDAY was almost unanimously preferred, so that's the day. Thanks for your patience!

***important***: The weather forecast unfortunately looks like showers throughout the week. We're not supposed to climb within 3 days of a rain, so if the weather isn't good anytime after Wednesday, we probably shouldn't go. In that case... informal skiing trip to Kirkwood!!]

[UPDATE (03/31/06): So far, interest has exceeded instructor capacity, so please know that if you sign up for the class now, there probably won't be spots left. If you send me an e-mail anyway, I'll let you know if something opens up. Clint will be starting Wednesday afternoon top-roping sessions at Handley soon, so that will be another chance to see what climbing outside is like. Thanks!]

I'm giving a SAC Intro Climbing class either April 8 or 9. Hope you can join us. Please see this page for updated details instead of the regular SAC calendar, because Clint will be taking a break as webmaster this week to send some hard routes at Indian Creek!!

Below is the original e-mail I sent out. Let me know if you have any questions.

WHAT: SAC Intro. Climbing Trip April 8 or 9 (please say what day works better for you) Just email me (cgchan@stanford.edu) by April 5 or so if you're interested in the trip.

WHY: Climbing outdoors is much more fun than any gym. It’s a great way to learn some basic climbing skills or to see if climbing is something you might be interested in. Plus you get to meet lots of people at Stanford who like to climb and do other cool stuff outdoors.

WHO: People who may have climbed in a gym but never really outdoors, or people who have never climbed at all and just want to try it out and see why so many people are addicted. Class size will be limited first come, first served.

MATERIAL COVERED: How to properly wear a harness, how to tie into the rope, belaying with an ATC, rope commands. Plus you will get to rappel (a rush the first time you do it!), learn how to back up the rappel, and get to climb outdoors!

WHEN: April 8 (Sat) or 9 (Sun). We'll organize carpools from Tresidder leaving around 8am; probably getting back around 6:30pm. The Friday night gym session will just be an hour, to go over some basics and straighten out gear issues - shoes, harnesses, etc.

WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min. drive from campus.

COST: For non Alpine Club members the cost will be $15; this does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Stanford Alpine Club members the cost is $10, not including food or gas. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up.

GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip and will be distributed during the Friday night meeting.

HOW: Reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL) and include the following information:

1) Your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, have you rappelled, do you know the basic knots used for tying in while climbing, etc.).
2) What you hope to get out of this class.
3) What day is best for you.
4) What you most like to do when you're outside.

Thanks!
Chris
