STRINGENT AND BASIC CRITERIA FOR REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS

After reviewing messages posted on the conferencing system to determine completion rate, it was brought to the author's attention that more stringent criteria existed in particular assignments. Recalculation of these assignments showed a lower completion rate than using basic criteria. For reference, the basic criteria for each assignment is shown, as well as stringent criteria in selected assignments.

Assignment 1.1

Basic criteria: Student posts a message that described him/herself. Titles and replies do not matter.

Assignment 1.2

Basic criteria: Student posted a review of one course (minimum). Replies do not matter.

Stringent criteria:

Choose four courses to review.

Post your review for each selected course.

Reply to comments made by other participants about your reviews.

Assignment 2

Basic criteria (135 completions): If student posts a link to a web page, it was counted as complete.

Stringent criteria (31 completions):

1. Post a page written in HTML that contains:

different headings

numbered list

bulleted list

hyperlink to another site

hyperlink to workshop homepage

mailto link

horizontal line

image

Comment on other students' homepages.

Assignment 3

Basic criteria (65 completions): Post a link to course web page.

Stringent criteria (5 completions):

Course homepage contains

• table or frame,
• graphics,
• headings and text with different fonts and colors,
• lists,
• series of links to other pages to be developed later,
• link to part 2 homepage,
• link to institution homepage.

2. Post to conferencing system a comment on others' pages, with the following: page easy to understand, things that are missing, any unclear parts.

Problem with scoring: series of links to other pages to be developed later could not be checked, since students created these pages in the early parts of the workshop, and evaluation took place at the end of workshop.

Assignment 4.1

Basic criteria (32 completions): Post a link to a syllabus and assignments page.

Stringent Criteria (7 completions): 1. Create a syllabus page, 2. create an assignments page, 3. post the URL of both pages, 4. post review of others' pages, 5. reply to all postings about your pages.

Assignment 4.2

Basic criteria (32 completions): Post a link to assignment submission page.

Assignment 5

Basic criteria (9 completions): Post a link to course material page.

Assignment 6.1

Basic criteria (5 completions): Post a link to discussion pages built with FrontPage.

Assignment 6.2

Basic criteria (8 completions): Post a link to a forum outline.

Assignment 6.3

Basic criteria (3 completions): Post problems, observations about the use of NetMeeting.

Assignment 7.1

Basic criteria (3 completions): Post a link to web page that contains directions for students to create their own portfolios

Assignment 7.2

Basic criteria (2 completions): Post a discussion about how you could establish a group organizational system for your class.

Assignment 7.3

Basic criteria (1 completion): Post your thoughts about how you might use counters, on-line grade posting, registration, and monitoring of what and when students use the web pages.
