Open source vs. proprietary GIS tools

An insightful discussion has been going on recently on the OSGeo-Discuss mailing list, around the question Can I do the same GIS tasks with OS (as with ESRI)? Among the main points: if you think open source, think modular. And: Good cartographic output remains a problem for open source. Other interesting issues are discussed, for example db capabilities.

GRASS, with FDO and GDAL 'graduate'

OSGeo is announces that the GRASS, together with GDAL and FDO projects has graduated from the incubation process and is now a full fledged
OSGeo project. From the announcement:

Graduating incubation includes requirements for open community operation, a responsible project governance model, code provenance and license verification and general good project operation. Graduating incubation is the OSGeo seal of approval for a project and gives potential users of the project added confidence in the viability and safety of the project.
