Open source vs. proprietary GIS tools

An insightful discussion has been going on recently on the OSGeo-Discuss mailing list, around the question Can I do the same GIS tasks with OS (as with ESRI)? Among the main points: if you think open source, think modular. And: Good cartographic output remains a problem for open source. Other interesting issues are discussed, for example db capabilities.

ArcGIS TimeSlider Extension

ASA software offers an interesting addition to ArcGIS.

After registration  you can download the free TimeSlider Extension (ArcGIS Extension for Version 9.2). It animates time-dependent shape files in ESRI Arc 9.2 products (includes demonstration data featuring temporal/time step functionality). Also available for Arc 9.1.
