Among the main points: if you think open source, think modular. And: Good cartographic output remains a problem for open source. Other interesting issues are discussed, for example db capabilities.
ASA software offers an interesting addition to ArcGIS.
After registration you can download the free TimeSlider Extension (ArcGIS Extension for Version 9.2). It animates time-dependent shape files in ESRI Arc 9.2 products (includes demonstration data featuring temporal/time step functionality). Also available for Arc 9.1.
