The heart of the JASON Project is scientific discovery. The JASON Project's expedition-based curricular materials challenge students to solve scientific problems. In this inquiry-based and content rich learning environment, students master scientific concepts, vocabulary, and process skills. All curricular exercises are correlated to the National Science Education Standards. The JASON Project traverses the globe each year, striving to answer the questions:

What are nature's dynamic systems?
How do these systems affect life?
What technologies do we use to study these systems and why?
The following is a breakdown of some of the specific science topics covered in JASON XIV -- The Channel Islands: From Shore to Sea (2002-2003):

Life Science: Marine Mammals, Kelp Forests, Botany, Marine, Terrestrial, and Coastal Ecosystems, Local Aquatic Field Study, Endemic and Exotic Species, Biodiversity, Ecology

Earth and Space Sciences: Geology, Platetetonics, Geologic History, Satellite Remote Sensing, Climatology

Physical Sciences: Visible Light, Light Absorption and Transmission, Chlorophyll Fluorescence, Buoyancy, Movement and Aerodynamic Design, Convection Cycles, Heat Transfer

Oceanography: Waves and currents, Upwelling, El Nino, Ocean Color

Geography: Mapping, GPS, GIS
