Marianne and I spent July of 2001 cycling from Vancouver, British Columbia to our home south of San Francisco.  Our route was a variant of the Pacific Crest Bike Trail (by Bil Paul).  This route criss-crosses the Pacific Crest Trail all along the Cascades and Sierras, and  we had ridden 2000 miles of it 10 years before.  This time when we got to Ashland, Oregon, we turned right and rode down the Northern California Coast through Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Gualala, and Bodega Bay. All in all it was 1550 miles of self-supported touring carrying bike packs on our Bike Fridays (folding bikes which pack into a hardshell suitcase, but ride like good road bikes).   I hadn't ridden at all for the nine months preceding the tour... but I made it!
