The Red and the Black
by Anonymous

The lighting poles upon our paths
Were lately mostly red.
A painter came along, and now
A lot are black, instead.

Though red was rather more in line
With Stanford's cardinal hue,
The sun had bleached it down to cream:
A switch was over-due.

While black may usually lack
Red's gleam, where red is rust
The darker hue outshines, and leaves
The lighter in the dust.

The pedestals that raise the globes
Which pierce the campus nights
Get small consideration, but
Deserve a bit, by rights.

And so, though no one's done a poll,
Few would, I think, contest
That, since their former shade was dull,
The change is for the best.
