On Casper's Inaugural: a Sonnet
by Anonymous

(This is the author's preferred title: this piece was originally published as "An Inaugural Sonnet")

October second, we all met at Frost,
So we could see installed as president
A man who might recover what was lost
Of Stanford's spirit, since the government
Cracked down upon our cost rates indirect.
Though we've endured a steady stream of woes,
He'll rally us to conquer, we expect,
And put to flight the galaxy of foes
Who'd see the university go down,
And would to education lay the torch.
Will Casper worthy be of his renown?
Or will this college fair become a scorch?
He's made a good beginning, and it looks
A wee bit brighter, now -- the man likes books!
