Book Sale: a Sonnet
by Brian Kunde
The Stanford Libraries must bankrupt be:
When I passed Meyer, they were selling books,
For less than what they'd paid, incredibly.
I stopped: it's not a thing one overlooks.
They hawked the paperbacks for but a dollar,
And hard-bound volumes sold for only two.
I found these bargain prices hard to swaller,
Though naturally, I purchased quite a few.
I still was puzzled why they'd sell their stock:
To solve this mystery I resolved to try.
I pondered long the motive for this shock,
And now I think I've found the reason why.
The books for sale must not be moving well,
So what they cannot lend, they think to sell!
