SUL/AIR STAFF RECOGNITION PARTY The SUL/AIR Staff Recognition Party will be held at the Faculty Club on Tuesday, December 9, 3:30-5:30. Though this is typically an annual event, last year went by so fast that this year's party will include two years' worth of honorees -- the festivities will specially recognize staff who have been in SUL for 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, and 31 years as well as those for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service. Please plan on joining this opportunity to honor our valued colleagues and friends. Presentations will begin around 4:00. Honorees will be notified within a few days regarding selection of a momento of their service. This event should not be confused with the Libraries' Distinguished Service Awards which will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 3:00-4:00. See below for more information on the Distinguished Service Awards. -- Submitted by Catherine Tierney ------------------------------------------------------- 2. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS It is my great pleasure to announce the recipients of this year's Committee on the Libraries of the University's Distinguished Service Awards. They are Grace Baysinger, Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Library; Julie Cain, Meyer Library; Marleen Madou De Cokere, Technical Services, SUL; and Harriet Wu, Technical Services, Law. Provost Condoleeza Rice will be presenting the awards in a ceremony next Wednesday, November 19th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Manning Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Law School. A reception will follow the awards ceremony. All library staff are invited to join the Provost in honoring the achievements and contributions of these four of our colleagues. -- Submitted by Jennie Nicolayev, Chair, Selection Subcommittee ------------------------------------------------------- 3. SEXUAL HARASSMENT BRIEFING FOR SUL/AIR STAFF About two years ago, department-based briefings on sexual harassment were provided for all Stanford faculty. Last year and continuing this year, similar briefings are being provided to staff. The 90-minute sessions are intended to increase staff understanding of what sexual harassment is and how Stanford responds to it. Emphasis will be placed on the supervisory response to allegations, as well as options and resources for all staff in preventing and dealing with sexual harassment. All staff are expected to attend these briefings. Ann Bender and Larry Niemeyer, Central HR, will be the presenters. Four sessions have been arranged for SUL/AIR staff. Dates and times are listed below. Please let us know which session you will attend by responding to Debbie/Cindy at hf.lpo@forsythe. CATALOGING CONSOLIDATED Two years ago we set up the new Technical Services management structure in which, among other changes, we experimented with Cataloging by dividing it into two separate departments, Cataloging Services and Catalog Development. The experiences of the past two years and the operational circumstances under which we now work have convinced us that a single Catalog Department is the better model for providing all cataloging services, present and future, to Stanford. So as of next Monday, November 17, the staff and responsibilities which resided separately in Cataloging Services and in Catalog Development are now combined into a single Catalog Department. We are especially pleased for Stanford that Philip Schreur, Head of Technical Services at our Music Library, will be the Department Head. It will be Philip’s job to oversee and coordinate the activities of all the units, which themselves are unchanged by the consolidation: Original Monograph Cataloging, Serials and Electronic Resources Cataloging, Database Management, and the small experimental unit Classification on Receipt. Phil’s library experience started when he was a Ph.D. graduate student in Musicology at Stanford. After earning his M.L.I.S. from Berkeley, he was a Music Cataloger at UC Davis and at UC Berkeley, where he also was NACO Coordinator (National Authorities Cooperative, managed by the Library of Congress). He came back to Stanford in 1994 as head of Technical Services at the Music Library. Phil has been very much a part of the issues and activities of cataloging throughout Stanford by his able contributions to further NACO development at Stanford and with Unicorn implementation for cataloging. We have been impressed by his ability to abstract from his music library experience and apply it more broadly to the issues and challenges facing a research University Catalog Department. Phil’s office will be in the administrative suite of Galvez Mods. The Technical Services organization chart reflects this change and can be viewed at: http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/diroff/ts/redesign/orgchart/orgchart.html -- Submitted by Catherine Tierney ------------------------------------------------------- 5. STANFORD AUXILIARY LIBRARY CLOSED ON 11/22 The Stanford Auxiliary Library will be closed on Saturday, November 22nd, due to traffic related to the Stanford-Cal football game. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. SAL pages requested via Socrates before 2:00 P.M. on Nov. 22nd, will be available for pickup from the Green Library Loan Desk after 4 P.M. -- Submitted by Naheed Zaheer ------------------------------------------------------- 6. THE NEXT QUESTION, PLEASE: NO.4 The Green Library Reference Desk got the following call: "This is the San Jose Mercury-News. We need a copy of the oath of office for a Federal judge. Could you fax or e-mail it to us? Naturally, we're in a real big hurry." A hint for answering this one: The oath is required by law for a judge to take office. If you know basically where to find it, that's considered a correct answer. If you can find an electronic copy for the high-speed fulfillment of a newsperson's impatient demands, you get double credit. Have fun. -- Submitted by Eric Heath, Reference, Green Library ------------------------------------------------------- Please send future submissions to SUL News Notes to Charity Nielson at cnielson@sulmail.stanford.edu. ------------------------------------------------------- SUL News Notes, an electronic publication of Stanford University Libraries is issued weekly.
