New Head of Serials Ordering & Receiving 5. New Staff in Green Loan and Portal ------------------------------------------------------- 1. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS I am pleased to announce that after a four year hiatus, the Distinguished Service Awards will be presented once again. This year's ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 19th, at 3:00; location as yet undetermined. This is early notice so that you can mark your calendars now. -- Submitted by Jennie Nicolayev Chair, DS Selection Committee ------------------------------------------------------- 2. INVENTORY OF CAPITAL EQUIPMENT As we prepare for our next physical inventory of capital equipment, scheduled for early 1998, we need to verify that all off-campus equipment is accounted for. If you have Stanford owned or government owned equipment at a non-Stanford location, documentation is required to verify physical location and purpose for which it is being used. I will be sending, through id mail, Off-Campus Equipment Inventory Verification Worksheets to all unit managers to distribute as appropriate. If you have previously completed a worksheet and the information is still accurate, please confirm by sending email to cskalski@sulmail. Please forward completed forms to Cindy Skalski, Sweet Hall, M/C 3090 no later than November 15, 1997. ------------------------------------------------------- 3. JACKSON LIBRARY EXHIBIT The Jackson Library has just mounted an exhibit memorializing J. Hugh Jackson, Dean of the Stanford Business School from 1931 to 1956, and the person for whom the library was formally named in 1966, at the dedication of the current GSB building. Dean Jackson had the longest tenure of any GSB Dean to date and was a notable friend and supporter of the library as core part of the GSB educational enterprise. Please stop by and take a look at this exhibit, which is located in the new display case on the first floor of the Jackson Library, just to the right of the entry area as you come in. The exhibit was prepared by Peter Latusek, Research Librarian and Bibliographer on the Jackson Library staff. -- Submitted by Robert Mayer, Jackson Library Public Services ------------------------------------------------------- 4. NEW HEAD OF SERIALS ORDERING & RECEIVING I am delighted to welcome Christa Easton to SUL as our Head of Serials Ordering and Receiving. This position was created over a year ago as part of Technical Services organizational realignment. Sharon Propas very ably included oversight of that unit with her other responsibilities while we searched high and low for a candidate the caliber of Christa, who accepted the position and arrived in August. Christa's responsibility covers ordering, check-in, and maintenance of serials, including government document serials. (Serials cataloging continues to report report within the cataloging group.) Christa was Serials Librarian at the University of Houston where, among other duties, she managed the Serials Receiving unit through conversion from online serials check-in in the GEAC system to the Innovative Interfaces system. Her responsibilities included work with **Texas State*** depository materials. As an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Michigan, Christa worked in the Serials Department and on online check-in project implementation. As part of her keen interest in serials, she has been a very active member of the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) and **recently completed** her second year as chair of the Program Planning Committee. Christa is SUL's lead for assessment and implementation of automated serials control. We are very fortunate to have Christa's expertise and enthusiasm included in our mix of terrific staff. Her office is on the internal edge of Meyer 4th floor -- the room with no windows. -- Submitted by Catherine Tierney ------------------------------------------------------- 5. NEW STAFF IN GREEN LOAN AND PORTAL Please join us in welcoming Guo Fen Wan to the Loan Division and Brian Wesenberg to the Portal Unit. Guo Fen Wan comes to us from the Green Library Stack Division where she has been employed since 1993. Guo Fen was with the Stanford Auxiliary Library before joining the Stack Division. Prior to coming to Stanford, Guo Fen worked as a radio announcer for about three years for the Chinese Broadcasting Inc. out of San Jose. We are very pleased to have someone coming on board with many years of library experience at Stanford. Guo Fen can be found behind the Loan Desk, Monday through Friday. Please stop by, introduce yourself and welcome her. Brian Wesenberg comes to us from Stack Division also, where he worked hourly since 1995. Brian has a B.A. in Anthropology from San Jose State University. While going to school at San Jose State, Brian worked in SJSU library's reserve book room for a couple of years. Prior to that, Brian worked at the Santa Clara Public Library circulation desk for about four years. Brian also has a couple of years of library science courses under his belt from SJSU. We are very pleased to have Brian on board. Please stop by and introduce yourself to Brian. You will see him at the portal on Monday mornings and Friday, Saturday & Sunday afternoons.
