CHANGES IN SUL CIRCULATION POLICIES Library staff are encouraged to get a copy of the new SUL Circulation Policies, available at any library Loan Desk or the Privileges Office in the Green Library, and familiarize themselves with the new policies governing circulation transactions within SUL. Among those changes which you should pay particular attention to are: * overdue fines will no longer be charged on material with loan periods of 28 days or longer. All overdue fines accumulated prior to Monday, 9/22/97, have been forgiven. * overdue material which has not been returned by 15 days after its due date will be billed for replacement charges. A non-refundable billing fee of $5.00 will be applied at that point. * renewal limits have been established and will be enforced * library notices returned because of a bad address (whether paper or email) will result in a block of the user's record until such time as a good address has been provided The new circulation policies follow a year of careful thought and discussion and have been revised to better support the use of the SUL collections by our primary clientele. The new policies have been approved by the Directors and CLIB. IF you have questions, please feel free to direct them to me. -- Submitted by Jennie Nicolayev ------------------------------------------------------- 2. SOCRATES II IMPROVEMENTS The latest version of Socrates II has a number of improvements including: * The ability to set a single date or range of dates for limiting your search results. * Clearer buttons for navigating and mailing from the results page. * The ability to select Scores and Recordings in a meaningful way. (Caution: Do NOT use Phrase searching with either Scores or Recordings selected.) * The ability to look at your search history (see button on the results pages) and redo prior searches. (Note: Though browses are also listed, you cannot redo those.) Some articles in the September 1997 issue that you may be interested in include: Try Out Socrates II, p. 5 Electronic Reserves Debuts at Meyer, p. 5 Learn Web Use, p. 6 Melvyl System on the Web, p. 8 Get SU-Licensed Web Resources from Anywhere, p. 10 About Computing 1997/98 is a yearly brochure that provides information about Stanford's computing services and facilities. It has both general descriptions about campus computing and specific information to help answer any questions you might have. You can access both publications on the Web at: http://www-leland.stanford.edu/dept/SUL/ritspub/ If you would like a printed copy of either publication (or want to subscribe to Speaking of Computers), please send mail to pubs@netserver. (Those who already subscribe to Speaking of Computers should be receiving a copy of both publications in ID mail this week.) -- Submitted by Eleanor Brown, RITS Publications ------------------------------------------------------- 5. NEW COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATION WEB PAGES The Stanford home page sports a new set of links under the heading Computing and Communication: http://www.stanford.edu/home/computing/ The intent of the pages is to organize Stanford's computing resources in terms of the services they provide, and not the organizations that provide them, so that students, faculty, and staff can find these services more easily. The pages under that heading were developed by a cross-unit team composed of representatives from ITSS and SUL/AIR: Eleanor Brown, SUL/AIR, Research and Instructional Technologies Support Chris Lundin, ITSS, Customer Assistance Jeff Merriman, SUL/AIR, Residential Computing Gary Payne, ITSS, Distributed Computing Group Dave Ream, ITSS, Communication Services This team was guided by input from other campus computing groups and departments. Gary Payne pulled together all the suggestions and incorporated them into the new pages. Christine Quinn of DCG will act as Web Coordinator for these pages, and will work with the CompComm team to address the inevitable flow of suggestions, changes and demands that will enhance the utility of these pages in the future. If you have comments or suggestions about the new pages send them to home-page@www.stanford.edu. -- Submitted by Eleanor Brown, RITS Publications and Gary Payne, ITSS ------------------------------------------------------- 6.
