1.  SERG UPDATE

NEW JOB FOR REBECCA WESLEY

As of August 1 Rebecca Wesley, formerly Rebecca Lasher, leaves her
position of the past ten years as Head Librarian and Bibliographer of the
Mathematical and Computer Sciences Library and takes on new
responsibilities as the Head, Academic Computing, Science and Engineering
Resource Group (SERG).  In this new job Rebecca will work with the
Library Systems Office, ATS, ADS, and ITSS in developing the computing
infrastructure necessary to provide adequate access to the bibliographic,
numeric, chemical, full-text, cartographic, and other types of data
sources necessary for the programs supported by the seven SERG libraries.
She will also lead SERG's expert partner program.

Rebecca brings many strengths to her new position.  She was one of the
original Stanford group responsible for the creation of the National
Computer Science Technical Report Library (NCSTRL) and continues to
manage the Stanford Computer Science E-Lib.  For the past four years
she has been participating in the Stanford Digital Library Initiative,
the NSF/NASA/DARPA funded project designed to further the development
of digital libraries.  Before coming to Stanford Rebecca was the
Computer Sciences Bibliographer at the University of Texas at Austin.
She is a graduate of Arizona State University and received her MA in
Library Science from University of Denver.  This fall she will receive
her certificate in C and Unix programming from the UCSC Extension.  In
her new job Rebecca will be based in the Branner Earth Sciences Library
and her new phone number will be 5-2597.

KAREN GREIG BECOMES ACTING HEAD OF MATH/CS LIBRARY

Beginning August 1 Karen Greig, Associate Engineering Librarian, will
assume the role of Acting Head Librarian and Bibliographer, Mathematical
and Computer Sciences Library.  Karen will be doing this job half-time
while continuing with her ongoing responsibilities in the Engineering
Library where she is Head of Reference Services and Bibliographer for
Civil and Mechanical Engineering.  Karen, a graduate in environmental
engineering from Northwestern University, has worked in the Engineering
Library since 1991 when she graduated from UC Berkeley with an MLIS.
Karen's phone number in the Math/CS Library will be 3-0864; her number
in the Engineering Library remains 5-1018.

RICHARD MANUCK RETIRES

After 30 years of dedicated service to the Stanford Libraries,
Richard Manuck took early retirement as of June 30th.  Richard
started his career at Stanford in the Computer Science Library
in Polya Hall.   In 1979, when the Computer Science Library merged
with the Mathematical Sciences Library, Richard joined the new
Mathematical and Computer Sciences Library team.  During Richard's
career at Stanford he has been a fixture in the Libraries, providing
excellent reference service and collection development.  Richard's
greatest achievement was the development of the Technical Reports
Collection which is the strongest computer science technical
reports collection in the world.  In respect of Richard's wishes no
public party/reception was held in his honor.

SERG SEEKS NEW MATH/CS LIBRARIAN

The Science and Engineering Resource Group seeks an industrious,
innovative, and imaginative individual to join its team and become the
Head Librarian and Bibliographer of the Mathematical and Computer
Sciences Library.  A full job description is available from

2.  ENGINEERING LIBRARY CHANGES REFERENCE HOURS

Effective August 1st, the Engineering Library's Reference Desk will be
closed between noon and 1 p.m.  When referring reference questions, please
advise patrons that there will be no reference assistance available during
that hour.
