SUL NEWS NOTES - May 16, 1997 +^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+^+ TABLE OF CONTENTS: 1. SLSA Officers Election 2. Titles to Make You Smile: The Spoken Word (Part 1) ------------------------------------------------------- 1. SLSA OFFICERS ELECTION Candidates for Stanford Libraries Staff Association The Stanford Libraries Staff Association (SLSA) is proud to announce the candidates for this year's election. SLSA would like to receive your votes before May 30, 1997. The new officers will be announced the first week of June, 1997. Please respond by e-mail to Marleen Madou at mrmadoud@leland. The candidates are as follows: Vice-President/President Elect / Chair Program committee : Jennifer Stringer (Lane Medical) Treasurer: Laura Sebastian Choose one. (SUL/AIR - Binding & Finishing) Debra Pounds (SUL/AIR - Privileges) Member at Large (1 yr. term): Suzanne Remington (Hoover) Member at Large (2 yr. term): Tom Holt (SUL/AIR - Serials & Choose one. Electronic Resources Cataloging) Sue-Ellen Johnson (SUL/AIR Acquisitions Dept. / formerly Hoover) As this year's vice-president, Andy Eisenberg (Crown Law) will be heading SLSA as she takes over the president slot from Jennie Nicolayev. A note about the candidates: JENNIFER STRINGER has been at the Stanford Libraries since 1988. She started as a student/worker, worked in the Meyer and Engineering Libraries before moving on to the Lane Medical Library. Jenn now holds the function of Media Librarian. Jenn helped put on some of the programs SLSA presented this year. As we ran into some difficulty finding multiple candidates for vice-president, we are very grateful to Jenn that she is willing to accept this responsibility. LAURA SEBASTIAN has been a very welcome member to Binding & Finishing. Laura loves people and likes to organize. Laura was instrumental in organizing the Meyer Halloween parties the last couple of years. In the capacity as treasurer, Laura will be a devoted member of the SLSA team and will keep accurate track of all the expenditures incurred by SLSA. DEBRA POUNDS can be found in the Privileges office. She keeps up the administrative side of the office, helps keep patron's records. No matter how difficult the patron, Debra always keeps up her happy face. At home she likes to sew, braid hair... Debra loves to read. SUZANNE REMINGTON is the "Group supervisor" in the Copy cataloging Dept. at Hoover and does her share of copy cataloging monographs and serials as well as occasionally other formats. She is fluent in English, French and German, and has a reading knowledge of Spanish and Italian. Suzanne heads the barcoding project and serves as the Expert Partner for Hoover technical services, which means she is the Unicorn-partner at Hoover. On her own time, Suzanne enjoys reading, growing orchids, gardening, woodworking, running, bicycling, yoga; not necessarily in that order. We would like to thank Suzanne for agreeing to step into the member-at-large position for the Coordinate Libraries. Again, finding candidates proved to be a challenge. TOM HOLT has been at the Stanford Libraries for ever (to quote his own words). Actually Tom started at Stanford in 1980 and held numerous positions over the years. He now is the Serials & Media Original cataloger in the Serials and Electronic Resources Cataloging department. Tom also serves as reference librarian in Cubberley. Last year Tom temporarily moved to the Jackson Business Library and helped bring that library into the on-line world. Tom received a wonderful quilt from the Jackson people as a token of their appreciation. You should stop by at his desk, Meyer fourth floor, to admire the handiwork. Tom likes to say that "his work is his life". But really he enjoys much more than work. He loves his 2 nieces Hannah and Emily (3 and 1 year old) and spends a lot of time with them. SUE-ELLEN JOHNSON left the position of head of Acquisitions and Copy Cataloging and her many friends at Hoover end of 1996 to become the head of Monographic Receiving at SUL/AIR. She also handles the fast track acquisitions material. Sue-Ellen Bohn moved to California from Florida and finished working on her MLS degree after her move. She started as copy cataloger and got promoted to head of Acquisitions and Copy Cataloging. Sue-Ellen recently married and changed her name to Johnson. We all know how stressful a new job and a new social setting can be. Sue-Ellen always keeps her spirits up and is an inspiration to all the people she works with or supervises. We hope the short description of our candidates will help you make up your mind quickly, so you can cast your vote in a timely manner. Thank you all for your cooperation. -- Submitted by Marleen Madou, Chair search committee. ------------------------------------------------------- 2.
