The program will be presented by SST Communications on Tuesday, May 20, 2:00-4:00 p.m., in Geology Building 320, Room 105. SST Communications, a theatre group from Chicago, conducts theatre skits on issues of diversity before corporations and universities around the country. SST's client base also includes General Mills, Eastman Kodak, American Airlines, Bowdoin College, and Yale University. Here are some comments made after attending a presentation: "SST never fails to mesmerize us and provide us with a wonderful and innovative learning experience." - Kathy Feraci, North American Benefits "SST is able to have an impact into education and discussion that would have been difficult to accomplish through any other presentation format." - Cindy Kaliff, City of Lincoln, Nebraska The best program on diversity I've ever seen ... powerful/wonderful speakers ... the messages are moving." - Susan Reichbart, College and University Personnel Association SST will perform brief vignettes and you will have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions on issues of individuality, respecting differences, and creating common ground in the workplace. CHANGE AND MORE CHANGE FOR BRANNER LIBRARY AND MAP COLLECTIONS - Jean Kan Appointed Map and GIS Librarian - When Map Librarian JK Herro left Branner and Stanford, his position was posted and a nation-wide search conducted. The Search Committee received applications from a number of candidates, but, upon examination of the files, it became clear that SUL/AIR had a more qualified person already on board. Thus a proposal was made to and accepted by the Directors to promote Jean Kan to Map and GIS Librarian. Jean has had a varied career at Stanford. From her degree in Music from UC-Berkeley, she came directly to Stanford to be the Added Copy specialist for the Cataloging Department. She served as Copy and Variant Edition Cataloger in the Music Library, Operations Manager of the Copy Cataloging Section, did a stint as Assistant Operations Manager in the Math/CS Library, and was co-head of the Monograph Receiving Unit, before coming to Branner in the Fall of 1995 as Multiformat Map specialist. In her almost two years at Branner, Jean has become our expert on maps of all sorts and formats, particularly those in ArcView. If you don't know what "GIS" and "ArcView" mean, you might make an appointment to join one of Jean's sessions and find out - but not until summer please - she has lots of eager student customers right now. - And Operations Manager Makes Two - After Branner very regretfully "loaned" Operations Manager Darsi Rueda to the Systems Office, Jane Ingalls and Juanita Shaikh began job sharing the Operations Manager position. Jane is responsible for Facilities and Unicorn Circulation. Juanita has Serials, Student Assistants, and the Stacks under her purview. Both are a part of the Earth Sciences Reference team. Their respective cats make sure they stay in line and work together. Jane's first Stanford appearance was as a programmer for SLAC. She later worked with the Associates of Stanford University Libraries in the '80's. Her degrees include an MA in Education from Stanford and an MLS from Simmons. Since 1994 she has been working half-time in Acquisitions and half-time implementing the File Migration Project. Although she retains her responsibility for the File Migration Project, she is housed 100% of the time in their office in Branner. Juanita came to Branner by way of the Business School Library and then the Art Library. She has been very ably carrying the heavy Branner Serials load since 1991. She has a degree in Psychology from Santa Clara University. She retains the most complex 50% of her Serials position. Picking up the remaining 50% of the Serials position is half-time Branner Acquisitions Specialist Elizabeth Cox. Liz has degrees in French and German from Western Michigan University. We welcome Jane to Branner, and offer congratulations to her, Juanita, Liz, Jean, AND Darsi for these well-earned promotions. -- Submitted by Charlotte Derksen - Head of Branner Earth Sciences Library and Steve Gass - Head - Science and Engineering Resource Group. ------------------------------------------------------- 5. RETIREMENT OF JANNA LEFFINGWELL FROM JACKSON LIBRARY Janna Leffingwell, Reference Librarian in the Jackson Library, took an early retirement effective May 6th. Janna began her career at Stanford in January 1966 in the Jackson Library Acquisitions Department, where she was responsible for the selection, ordering and cataloging of serial and periodical publications, bindery processes and related work. As tradition dictated in the Jackson Library, service at the library Reference Desk was from the first also a basic component of her service. In 1970 Janna moved into the Cataloging Department where she was responsible for the cataloging of all of the various types of material collected by the library. With the reorganization of the library and Computing into Information Resources in 1991, Janna moved full-time into the public service arena and became even more highly visible to the GSB community as a part of the core service team in the Jackson Library Reference Department. In that capacity she has been a major service provider to students, staff, faculty, alumni and the whole range of clients served by the Jackson Library. This service has constituted a personally satisfying capstone to Janna's career, since she had many opportunities to learn new skills, what with the entry of substantial computing resources into the library, and what she likes to call the new "can-do" service philosophy in the library. She has played a large role in the recent efforts to better coordinate library and other functions in computing and FIRST, working the MBA Lab and performing all scheduling for these various service teams. Over the years Janna has seen many changes and significant events in the history of the GSB. She remembers well the times when the GSB was headquartered in the old Quad, and observed the last period of the construction of the current GSB building, as well as the Big Move into it in the summer of 1966. She also has many memories of those turbulent times in the 60's and early '70's when the School was under perilous siege by always vociferous, often violent, demonstrators, and when the National Guard had to maintain physical security, not only for GSB personnel, but for the protection of the physical facility itself. In those days you might literally be just a stone's throw away from the street--and trouble. In more recent times, of course, Janna was also a hardy survivor of the Big One in October 1989, and shared in the strenuous task of reconstructing the shattered remains of what had been the Jackson Library. Hers have surely been eventful years here. We are grateful to Janna for her 31years of service to the GSB and thank her for her total dedication to the School and to outstanding customer-driven service. We also want to make note of the fact that she is likely the only library staff member to have been awarded a "30- year" service pin and also now has the distinction of being the "most senior veteran" out of all current GSB staff known to us. Janna and her husband have purchased a new homestead in Sonora, Calif., and they are looking forward to a life of the quiet country tranquillity, as well as travel across the Continent itself in their new motor home. I know that all of the Stanford library community will join me in extending thanks to her for her service to the GSB and in wishing her well in her "graduation" from the GSB. -- Submitted by Robert Mayer, Jackson Library Public Services ------------------------------------------------------- 6.
