1. Alex Ross in Print

Alex Ross, Head Librarian of the Art and Architecture Library, has just published two substantial entries for the new Dictionary of Art, edited by Jane Turner (New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996). Alex's contributions cover the "catalogue" and "encyclopedias and dictionaries of art," and both articles offer not only sound historical overviews, but also many details and bibliographic pointers of potential interest to library staff members. Moreover, Alex's articles join those of other contributors from Stanford, including Lorenz Eitner, Suzanne Lewis, Jodie Maxmin, Dwight Miller, Paul Turner, Richard Vinograd from the Art Department, Peter Stansky from the History Department, and Hilarie Faberman and Carol Osborne from the Stanford Museum. A copy of the Dictionary of Art is available in the reference collection of the Art Library; feel free to have a look and congratulate Alex while you are at it.

2. SUL/AIR's "Before the Dismal Science" Exhibit

SUL/AIR's exhibit "Before the Dismal Science: Selections from The Gustave Gimon Collection of French Political Economy" runs through May 4 in Green Library lobby. A recent major acquisition, the collection consists of French books and manuscripts of the 16th through 19th centuries focusing on the scientific development of political economy, the world of the everyday marketplace, early utopias and utopian socialism, and workers' rights movements.

On Tuesday February 25 the Gimon Collection will be the subject of a panel discussion co-chaired by Professors Ralph Hester and Keith Baker, to be held in Building 30, Room 102. A reception follows in Pigott Hall, Bulding 260, Room 216. Both events are open to the public. For more information, contact Barbara O'Neil, 723-6985.
