1. New Assignment for Paul Zarins

I am pleased to announce that Paul Zarins has accepted a new assignment as Social Sciences Data Librarian within the Social Sciences Resource Group. In this capacity, Paul will provide programmatic leadership for the Academic Data Service, a program for the acquisition and use of numeric social science research materials in machine-readable form. In his new assignment Paul will work closely with Pat Box who heads the operational end of the service and with the Academic Data Service Task Group. Paul will continue in his role as Bibliographer for Economics. Congratulations, Paul!

2. Jackson Library's Shirley Foster to Retire

Shirley Foster, a member of the GSB's Information Resources FIRSTeam and long-time Jackson Library staffer, will be taking early retirement at the end of February. We are both happy for her and yet sad to see her depart our ranks.

Shirley began her 20-year long career at the GSB in January 1977 as a half-time member of the Jackson Library's Circulation Department and a half-time member of the Documents Department, although she had already worked for more than a year as an hourly employee in that same department. In Circulation Shirley was one of the regular Library Assistants, helping library users by charging out books, giving directions, and that whole variety of tasks that encompass such work. In the Documents Department (now extinct!), Shirley oversaw the ordering, processing and cataloging of federal documents for the Jackson Library collections.

In December 1983, Shirley was promoted into an entirely new area as the supervisor of the Corporate Reports Unit. She took charge all of the processes involved in managing the Jackson Library's huge Corporate Reports Collection, one of the largest in the world. This included tracking new companies, ordering their annual reports and cataloging them for the library collections, as well as processing them for the shelving and use. The overall excellence and comprehensiveness of this collection owes much to Shirley's unceasing efforts to sustain and nurture it. During this period she also survived the Great Loma Prieta Shaker and pitched right in with the rest of the staff in the incredible project to reconstruct the Jackson Library into at least some semblance of its former self.

Following the merger of the Jackson Library with Computing Services into Information Resources, Shirley moved into many other areas of library work, including service at the newly designed Information Desk where she began once again to assume a higher visibility to the GSB Community. In June of 1995 the new Faculty support service FIRSTeam began operations and Shirley left Corporate Reports to become an integral part of that new service team, at the same time continuing public service work in the library itself. She also assumed responsibility for coordinating the work of a new library research support team, called the Research Group. This important team has completed substantial research projects not only for the Career Management Center, but also for major faculty and the Deans' office research projects. The success of this group owes much to Shirley and its efforts will continue to produce benefits to the School.

At the end of her long career at the GSB Shirley leaves a strong legacy of stewardship for the library, its collections and its unflagging commitment to outstanding customer service. The conscientious and meticulous care which she has consistently demonstrated over each and every one of her responsibilities are known to us and will not be forgotten.

At Shirley's request her retirement will be recognized by a reception for Information Resources staff on her last day of work.

I know that we will all join together in wishing Shirley the very best as she moves on to the glorious freedom and "leisure" of those fabulous retirement (but not retiring) years!

3. Computing Distribution and Dropoff Appleshare Servers Eliminated

On March 21, 1997, the Computing Distribution and Dropoff Volume servers in the Stanford AppleTalk zone will be permanently switched off. The machine upon which these servers are running is too old, and will not be replaced. On the other hand, the services offered by these servers will still be available to Stanford Macintosh users through other means:

Computing Distribution services

All of the software that was on the Computing Distribution server will now be available on the Site Licensed server. The only difference is that you'll have to log on to this server in order to establish your affiliation with the Stanford community. Where the Chooser asks for your Name, enter your SUNet ID (which is the same as your Leland username); for Password, enter your SUNet ID password. You'll find that the software on Site Licensed is newer and more up to date. Software on Computing Distribution is no longer being updated.

The documentation that was on the Computing Distribution server is either obsolete or is now readily available from other sources, such as the Web.

Dropoff services

The Dropoff Volume has been rendered obsolete since the development of Sharing on the Macintosh. If you'd like to learn how to use Sharing to exchange files with other people over the network, see:

http://www/group/partners/notes/mac/filesharing/filesharing.html

This document takes you through the process step-by-step.

If you have any questions about the discontinuation of the Computing Distribution or Dropoff Appleshare servers, please contact Rich Graves at 725-7710, llurch@networking.stanford.edu.
