Summer and Fall Training Opportunities for Unicorn, Fast Track and the Pentium/Windows 95 Rollout

A series of training sessions related to Unicorn functionalities, Fast Track processing implementation, and the Pentium/Windows95 rollout has been planned for the remainder of the Summer and into the Fall. This program presents opportunities for indepth training on various functionalities for those who need that level of expertise to do their work as well as overview training for others thoughout the libraries who will interact more casually with the various elements of our new online environment. Please sign up as soon as possible as directed below for the training sessions you wish to attend. The contact people listed for each training segment can also answer any questions you might have about the scope of the training and the intended audience.

Unicorn and Related Training: Jul-Sept 96

1. Unicorn Functional Overview: July 29-Aug 2, Presentation Palace:

Focus: system overview & searching for those with functional responsibilities.

Required for all staff who will be doing hands-on training in either circ, cat, or acq. (see 2,3,4 below).

2. Hands-on Circ training: Aug 5-16. Systems Training Room

Required for all circ staff & others who perform circ functions in their work

3. Hands-on Cat training: Aug 19-30; Systems Training Room

Required for all cat staff.

Training will consist of 2 sessions: Cat I and Cat II. Sign up for one 3 hour slot in each session.

4. Hands-on Acq training: Aug 26-Sep 6; Systems Training Room

Required for all acq staff.

Classes 1 and 5 will be geared for a general audience.

Classes 2-4 will be geared to specific policies and procedures for the Serials & Acquisitions Dept. for the following areas: monograph receiving,monograph & serials ordering, and serials receiving.

5b. Win95 for Mere Mortals: variable dates/times (see below), Presentation Palace

Focus: overview of Win95 including how to navigate, print, manage files, and shortcuts Recommended for all SUL/AIR staff who will be using Win95.

5c. Windows 95 Hands-on Training

ITSS will hold hands-on training sessions for Win95 during September and Fall Quarter. Dates will be announced soon.

5d. Win95 Microsoft Word & Excel: overview of new features; variable dates (see below); Presentation Palace

Focus: review of new features of these two programs

Recommended: for all staff who will be upgrading to these versions as part of the Win95 conversion

Focus: Review of new web based opac and implications for Folio access; required for reference staff; recommended for all staff

RITS Writer

David Miller, a member of the RITS staff, is a contributing author in the recently published volume "Inside Director 5," published by New Riders. Director (by Macromedia) is the industry standard authoring tool for multimedia production. Dave, an experienced multimedia developer and programmer, wrote chapters for the volume on planning and staging a Director production, and on creating computer-generated 3D graphics.

Dave applies his multimedia skills in his work as the Information Resources Specialist in the School of Education. This quarter, in addition to his development and consulting work in Education, he is a guest lecturer in Prof. Decker Walker's class "Interactive Media in Education." Department Head Vacancy

The Stanford University Libraries is seeking an experienced senior librarian with an academic research library background for the position of Head, Department of Special Collections and Frances and Charles Field Curator of Special Collections.

The position is posted at the Senior Librarian (C-8) level with a salary range of $49,248 - $81,264 with an in hire max at $63,912.

The Libraries seek an individual with demonstrated experience in the special collections filed to develop and manage the Libraries' special collections. It is the general responsibility of the Head and Curator to provide overall guidance, direction, and focus to the Department. The Department Head will be responsible for leading and managing the work of five Special Collections librarians: the University Archivist, the Manuscript Processing Librarian, Public Services Librarian, and two Special Collections Catalogers. The curator will actively participate with other subject and area curators in an integrated collection development program for Special Collections -- in particular the 9 curators from the Humanities and Area Studies Resource Group. In collaboration with the Department's librarians and with the other curators and selectors in the Libraries, and the AUL for Collections, the Department Head will define collection policy and coordinate acquisitions. The Department Head and Curator will work closely with the University Librarian and other library and University officers to promote and maintain excellent relations with donors and friends.

Qualifications include five years experience in the field of special collections librarianship and sound and extensive knowledge of rare books and manuscripts. An ALA accredited MLS or the equivalent in experience is required; advanced graduate training in one or more fields relevant to the position responsibilities is required.
