Mary Norton Passes Away

It is with a great deal of sadness that I announce the death of Mary D. Norton, at age 78, on May 19th. A Stanford alumnus, Mary was hired by David Weber and worked on an hourly basis for some years before moving into the then new J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library in December of 1966. She occupied an office on the 4th floor of Meyer for almost 20 years after that, eventually becoming a regular half-time staff member. Mary supervised the residence based libraries which existed at that time and worked as the only non-librarian on the reference desk for many many years.

She retired in September of 1986 and promptly took on the task of cataloging the library collection at Filoli, of whose board she was a member at the time of her death. She and her husband, Bob, were also very active in the Red Cross at both a local and national level, and devoted many hours of volunteer work to that organization.

Mary was known for her graciousness, kindness, and upbeat spirit, which never failed her or others, even during difficult times. She touched many lives and will be missed by all of the many friends she made along the way. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 25, at 2:00, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park.
