Sad Nees from Special Collections

It is with sadness that I announce the death of Margaret Sowers, AB Stanford 1927. Margaret was a generous and dedicated volunteer in the Stanford University Libraries' for close to twenty years. She gave many years of valuable service on the Board of Directors of the Associates of the Stanford University Libraries, where she was honored with a lifetime membership. In 1995 she was given a Stanford Associates Outstanding Achievement Award for her "exceptional generosity and wisdom as a volunteer for the University Libraries." In 1981 she began work to arrange and describe over 4,000 antiquarian maps in the Department of Special Collections. Not content to maintain a paper-based catalog of the maps, Margaret purchased a computer and began the task of learning how to construct an online database. Once she completed the cataloging of the department's maps, she created a similar database describing her own extensive antiquarian map collection. Asked in an interview why she chose to catalog rare maps, Margaret laughed and replied that she was born with antiquarian tastes. Not surprisingly, when Dr. Lewis Terman subjected her to his famous series of aptitude tests, her set of responses classed her as a librarian.

The staff of Special Collections particularly benefited from her knowledge, her wit, and her wisdom. As a regular participant in the department's weekly staff meetings, she kept abreast of news in the department and the library. And she kept us informed of relevant developments in the world by means of her "personal" New York Times clipping service. Margaret was very much a part of the department's personality and kept us from taking ourselves too seriously through her delightful, dry sense of humor. We are grateful to Margaret for sharing her life with us and for teaching us by her example how to live fully and well.

No formal services are planned, but I urge friends and acquaintances of Margaret's to share their memories of her with others.
