Catalog Records for Internet Resources

As a participant of the OCLC Internet Cataloging Project (project description available at

http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/catproj/catcall.htm

SUL catalogers have created catalog records for a number of Internet resources. Like other catalog records, these records are accessible in Socrates by title, issuing body, LC subject heading, and LC classification number, but distinguishable from other records by the location "Networked Electronic Resources" and the presence of an URL (uniform resource locator) instead of a call number. The online resources included in this experimental project were selected by our science bibliographers. Here are some of the titles:

The full set of records can be retrieved by a

"fin sp networked electronic resources"

search in Socrates.

There are many questions and issues related to the cataloging of this type of materials, including:

We hope that with our newly gained experience through this project, and some actual records in the system to experiment with, we can begin to tackle some of these issues. Your comments and suggestions on this approach and the effectiveness of the records that we have created so far would be most welcome and appreciated. Please send them to Vitus Tang (vtang@sulmail) or Willy Cromwell-Kessler (willyck@sulmail).

Ever have trouble finding out what CD-ROMs are available in Stanford University Libraries? It is now possible to search by format to see what CD-ROM titles the Stanford University Libraries own. The value "CD-ROM" has been put in the 755 field and is searchable via the GENRE index (see sample search below).

Many thanks to Rita Lunnon, Willy Cromwell, Lynne Sinclair, and Rebecca Lasher for making this possible!

Borrower Blues: A Poem

This book's in the South Stacks,
that one's off in SAL.
This one's here, but checked out.
That one's simply gone.
I'm just out of luck:
project's nearly due.
Can't complete it, now.
I've got the borrower blues.

Portal jockey stops me
'cause I've lost my card.
Can't get in my locker --
combination's lost.
I'm plain out of luck:
project's due today.
Can't complete it, now.
I've got the borrower blues.
Can't check out that thesis
I need to consult.
Haven't brought the last back:
lost the book last month.
Haven't got the money
on me for the fine.
I'm shit-out-of-luck, now.
project's over-due.
Can't finish, no way.
I've got the can't hack it,
hard case, no good,
dead-beat, bummed out,
borrower --
buh-luuues....
