SUL/AIR WEB ADVISORY COMMITTEE APPOINTED

In recognition of the importance of the World Wide Web, its related technologies, and successor technologies to the information access and delivery, instructional, and academic computing environment supported by SUL/AIR, we have established a Web Advisory Committee.

The members of the Committee are:

In its charge, the group has been asked to assess the current SUL/AIR Web space and develop a program to continue to define and implement

We have also asked the Web Advisory Committee to assess the current level of Web training and technology skills of the SUL/AIR staff and develop a program concerning

We anticipate that the Committee will have much active engagement with groups and individuals throughout SUL/AIR and beyond as it does it work, but we also invite you to communicate your ideas and concerns about our Web space and Web resources to Jim Coleman (jwciii@leland) or to any other members of the Committee.

LASU BROWN BAG SERIES ON COLLECTIONS KICKS OFF WITH ANGILETTA TALK

Tony Angiletta, Assistant University Librarian for Collections, SUL, will lead off LASU'S Brown Bag Series on Collections, next Wednesday, January 17th, at noon. His talk is entitled "To be a Collection Developer in the Electronic Age: Anachronism, Anomaly or Ambidexter?" Please note a room change for this talk: the location will be Room 62, in GSB, rather than the Ida Green Room. Room 62 is off of the GSB inner courtyard, to the right of the large auditorium. Bring your lunch and find out about what collection development looks like in the electronic age!

Please note two corrections to the News Notes article on this series in last week's News Notes. Mary Jane Parrine and Ramon Myers will be speaking on Wednesday, April 3 (not April 4) and Roberto Trujillo and Maciej Siekierski will be speaking Wednesday, April 24 (not April 25).

GARY DAVIS ADDS MLIS TO HIS RESUME

I am very pleased to announce that Gary Davis, Head of the Interlibrary Lending unit in Interlibrary Services, has completed the requirements for his MLIS degree at San Jose State University and is hereby an official librarian. He would have undergone this transmogrification much earlier had he not taken the ILL position in September of 1994 so we in ILS are particularly pleased at his success and impressed with the standard of excellence he was able to maintain in all areas, while juggling multiple balls this past year and a half.

His thesis was a technical paper on the subject of the Web and its capacity for growth.

Please join us in congratulating Gary on this accomplishment!

BRAVO JOANNE! WELCOME ALICE!

Congratulations are in order for a Technical Services familiar, JoAnne Klock, whom many of us just see as blurred image whizzing by on one of her many missions. To others of us she represents a constant source of energy, support, and comfort. Joanne has recently had a significant career change and promotion within Technical Services. Although she is leaving her position as Serials Acquisitions Coordinator on the 4th floor of Meyer, (and taking her trolls with her), she is moving only steps away to the Payments Group where she will serve as Payments Specialist under the tutelage of Miriam Palm. In Payments, JoAnne is sure to use her excellent financial and organizational skills to great advantage. We wish her all the best in this new endeavor.

To fill these fleet shoes we warmly welcome Alice Duran as the new Serials Acquisitions Administrative Coordinator, who brings to Technical Services more than 20 years of Stanford experience at the Graduate School of Business Library, Center for Disease Research and more. She has served on the Board of the Stanford Staffers and already has many friends in the Libraries. Many of you who have seen her during her first week on the Meyer 4th Floor have surely divined that she is a perfect choice. If you haven't made her acquaintance yet, please stop by and say hello.

THE HOLIDAYS AT STANFORD: A POEM

They're gone.

The college
notes the difference.

The holidays have come
and the students gone,
the structures whisper.

The buildings
on the deserted,
fog-shrouded campus
look like faces.

Eye-windows, hollow and dark,
stare out mournfully
at the empty bike-racks;
the predator's baffled scan
of a plain divested of prey.

Door-mouths, set grimly,
no longer smile wide:
locked tight against the lonely,
inquisitive wind, they resent
this unaccustomed, unaccountable,
incomprehensible solitude.

The buildings' cheery caps,
woven of red-baked tile
so in keeping with the season,
seem most out of place here
in the quiet, grey, swirling fog.
There is no cheer to match cheer.
No one has come to the party.

The paths the haunted eyes survey
are unwalked; undriven; empty;
the lamps that pace them, dim;
the grass that laps their edges,
untrammeled; unfrequented
by the athletic, flamboyant
Frisbee-throwers
and their frisky dogs.

Even the steps of Meyer,
toe-feet dipping into
the cold asphalt
of the Library Quad,
their edges polished black
by the wheels of callow,
destructive skate-boarders,
are now silent, abandoned by
their young parasites.

The few hold-out staff members,
burning the thin holiday oil
to keep a few eye-windows lit with life,
are like fireflies buzzing about
in a dry, empty skull;
the illusion of a soul,
only emphasizing the vacancy,
like Noah's family
after the deluge
on an unpeopled planet.

ELLA HARSIN RETIREMENT DEDICATION SONG

The following was sung by R.T. Carr III to commemorate the retirement of Ella Harsin, after 26 years of library service. Just wanted to share this with her many friends who may not have heard it -- the party was a ROARING success, with about three different batches of folks showing up!

Retirement!!!
(To the tune of NEW YORK, NEW YORK)

Start spreading the news...Ella's leaving today
Shes gonna be a part of it...Re-tirement!
She's paid all her dues...She's outta here today!
She'll make a grand new start of it...Re-tirement!

She's gonna wake up...and then go back to sleep
She'll find she has Discounts Galore
A..A..R..P!!!

She'll put on her track shoes, On vacation she'll stay
and with that Monthly check...Its Re-Tire-ment!

Ya know she's quite a GOIL,
There's grandchildren to spoil
It's all for her...Re-tire-ment...
(Musical interlude)
Retirement!
She's gonna wake up...toss the alarm out the door
She'll find she has time to relax, discounts galore,
Senior Bus Pass, and so much more!

Her work-a-day blues...are melting away!
She's now a part of it...Re-tirement!
and with that monthly check, she's carefree
and What the heck! (Ella we'll miss you)
It's all for you...
Retirement! (Hold note until you fall down)

Many happy returns!

--R.T.Carr III, Loan Division
