The Mammoth in the Garden
by Geoffrey Skinner
What is that animal
outside your window?
Could it be a mammoth
with great huge feet?
Rather like an elephant—
but what size!
What a hairy coat!
Look at those magnificent tusks!

I wonder where she is going?
What if she tramples your garden?
You spent a long time
planting crocuses and daffodils.
What? A mouse?
Not a mammoth at all?
My mistake!
Your garden’s safe, then!
Not a single crocus will be harmed
By a misplaced foot.
It must have been the sun in my eyes—
reflection can play such strange tricks.

I wonder how the mammoth felt
when she found
that she had become
so small?
from The Bestiary.
