Survivors’ Gilt
by Brian Kunde
We stragglers muddle on
While heroes fall in glory,
A tattered tag upon
Their fraught and epic story.
We’re gleaners on their field,
Despoiling what they leave.
They stood and would not yield,
But we’re too poor to grieve.
The saga is forgotten:
Survivors illy-gotten
Necessities must sieve.
