Farewell to fields we have known—
The days we’ve dwelt therein are past;
The cage stands breached. Its bird has flown
Small home abandoned for a vast
And unknown space of ways unmarked.
On wings untested, we’re embarked.

What waits ahead we can’t foresee;
What’s left behind we know too well—
So dare the tempest! Brave the sea!
Old berths are snug, but once the shell
Is shattered, one must spurn the nest,
To seek some place unkenned for rest.

So pinions, surge, and sweep in flight
Fledged fetters off! We leave behind
Our prison. Where we may alight
Tomorrow tells, the roost we find
Lit brighter for the daring we
Steer on that fate we can’t foresee.
