Edward attended Yuba City grammar school. In 1925 Edward resided at 200 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. His occupation was given as truck driver.
Edward married (first), on August 22, 1925 at ------, ------, Hazel Lillian Baker. She was born May 27, 1907 in ------, California, the daughter of George B----- Baker and May L----- (------) Baker.
Children:
In April, 1930 Edward, Hazel, their two children, and Hazel’s mother were living at #210 Wilbur, with the family of Ed’s brother Otto occupying #208 and his mother and two youngest brothers still in the old family home at #200. All three homes were stated to be on a farm. Edward’s occupation was given as orchardist and Otto’s as farmer. Hazel was a carrier on a paper route.
From at least 1931 through 1934 the Kundes lived in a house at 371 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. Edward was a clerk for Gerald F. Raub's grocery store, 532 2nd, Yuba City in 1931, and a salesman for David L. Aitken's laundry, 641 Sutter, Yuba City in 1934.
By 1936 the family was living in a house at 628 Bridge Street, Yuba City, where they continued to reside through at least 1938. Edward was a driver for Marysville Steam Laundry in 1936. From at least 1938 through 1942 his occupation was given as driver with no employer listed. By 1938 Hazel was a beauty operator at Newton Y. Orange's beauty shop, 422 1/2 D, Marysville. She continued to work for Orange through at least 1942.
Edward and Hazel separated by 1940. In that year Edward resided at 429 Wilbur Avenue, and Hazel's address was given as Newton Orange's beauty shop at 422 1/2 D. She resided in Orange's house at 1503 Yuba, Marysville in 1942, and was at that time still an operator at his beauty shop, the location of which was now 416 5th, Marysville. This is the last mention of her in the Marysville-Yuba City directories. She married Newton Orange, and they subsequently lived in San Francisco and worked in real estate. Edward was of Yuba City in January 1941, when his mother died. By 1942 he was again living in the house at 628 Bridge Street, was his address of record through at least 1944. He was employed as a truck driver by Hemstreet & Bell, Co. in 1942.
Edward joined the U.S. Army December 3, 1942 at Yuba City. He arrived at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, by January 26, 1943, where he was assigned to the 14th armored division, commanded by Major General Vernon E. Prichard. The 14th was activated November 15, 1942, went overseas October 14, 1944, and saw 167 days of combat in the Rhineland and Central Europe under Prichard and his successor Major General Albert C. Smith. The division returned to the United States September 7, 1945, and was inactivated September 16, 1945.
Edward likely did not serve with the division through its inactivation; he was probably the “Edward B. Kunde” shown in the 1944 Marysville-Yuba City directory as a driver for Gibson Bus Lines, 422 4th, Marysville. The last reference in the Marysville-Yuba City directories that could be to him is from 1946, when an “Edward G. Kunde”, driver, is shown as residing at 429 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. This reference, however, might actually be to his son.
From at least 1949 through 1952 Edward lived in a house at 3740 Jeffrey Avenue, Sacramento, California. In 1949 his occupation was given as clerk for the Hobrecht Lighting Fixture Company, 2311 J.
Edward was of Sacramento in 1955, when his brother Otto died.
From at least 1960 through 1965 Edward resided at 6100 Dias Avenue, Sacramento. During these years he worked as a driver for A. Teichert & Son, Inc., engineering contractors, paving, grading and sewage, 1931 Stockton Boulevard. He continued to work for this firm until he retired in 1971.
Edward married (second), on June 30, 1967 at ------, ------, Madaline J----- Butler. She was born ------ --, ---- in ------, ------, the daughter of ------ ------ ------ and ------ ------ (------) ------. Ed and Madaline had no children, although she had at least one child from a previous marriage.
Madaline J. Kunde was working as a clerk for the State Department of Education in 1968 and 1969. Her residence was given as Carmichael, Sacramento County, California.
In 1971 Edward and Madaline moved to Auburn, Placer County, California, where they were living through at least 1992. They were living in Hawaii in 1997.
Edward died Sunday, September 16, 2001 at Kona Community Hospital in Honalo, Kona, Hawaii at the age of ninety-six years. His last residence was in Honalo, Kona, Hawaii. He was survived by his wife Madaline, his daughter, and a stepson, Orrin Orville Olson. No services were held.
After her divorce from Edward Kunde, Hazel L. (Baker) Kunde married (second), on ------ --, 194- at ------, ------, Newton Y----- Orange. He was born December 5, 1897 in Ardmore, Carter County, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), or by another account in Butler County, Kentucky, the son of William Sanford Orange and Lou (Fowler) Orange.
In 1944 and through at least 1945/46 they were living in a house at 247 Connecticut, San Francisco. They moved three times in the next few years; in 1948/49 they lived at 501 Arkansas, and in 1951, 1606 Church. From at least 1953 through 1968 they were living in a house at 154 Benton Avenue. Newton was working in real estate at 1633 20th in 1948/49, and in 1951 both he and Hazel were associate brokers at Oles Realty Co. From 1953-1959 Newton worked at Inner Mission Realty, and from 1961-1962 at 3226 Mission. No occupation is shown for him afterwards, though in 1967-1968 Hazel was working as a clerk.
Newton Y. Orange's last residence was San Francisco, California. He died March 5, 1970 at the age of 72 in Santa Clara County, California.
Hazel does not appear in subsequent San Francisco directories.
She was living in Sacramento in 1992.
Hazel Orange died December 5, 2004 at the age of 97 at Gramercy Court Care Center in Sacramento. A graveside service was held at 3:00 P.M. December 10, 2004 at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery, Butte County, California.
