Of August's early life and education it is known that he was literate, and had learned English by 1900.
August immigrated to the United States in 1895, probably with his parents and sister Minnie, joining his older brother Albert who was previously established there.
In 1900 August was living with his parents, sister and brother-in-law John C. Eckers on Eckers' farm in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, Minnesota. August was employed, presumably by Eckers, as a farm worker in that year. He was unemployed one month out of the twelve preceding June 1, 1900.
August never married, and in later years fell out of touch with the family.
He died at a place called the Mission Farm, possibly a retirement home, which was probably near St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The date is unknown, but was probably no earlier than about 1930 and almost certainly no later than 1968. He was likely either the August Kunde who died May 24, 1949 in ------, Olmsted County, Minnesota, or the August K. W. Kunde who died March 24, 1957 in ------, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The latter’s reported birthdate was March 23, 1884, which is close to that recorded for August in the 1900 U.S. Census. August's funeral was attended by his nieces Louise and Minnie Eckers, along with Grace Eckers, wife of his nephew Bennie.
