         Jewish American novelist born in Baltimore, Maryland who specialized in well-researched historical novels.

             A novel concerning the birth of the modern nation of Israel, which traces the clandestine project of protagonist Ari Ben Canaan to bring Jewish refugees to Palestine, and follows the life stories of a number of the refugees and other characters whose destinies are tied in to the national story. Based in part on the factual ordeal of the emigrant ship Exodus 1947. Adapted to film in 1960.
