Tyler, Anne, 1941-
American author born in Minneapolis, raised in North Carolina, and resident in Baltimore,
Maryland, the setting of the majority of her novels. Her novels generally focus on the family
relationships of ordinary (if often unusual) people.

The Accidental Tourist. 1985.
Travel guide writer Macon Leary, estranged from his wife Sarah in the wake of their son's death,
moves in with his oddball siblings. Becoming involved with dog trainer Muriel Pritchett, he must chose
between her and his wife when the later seeks a reconciliation. While the Learys do get back together,
Macon eventually decides to return to Muriel. Winner of the 1985 National Book Critics Circle Award and
a finalist for the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Adapted to film in 1988.

Breathing Lessons. 1988.
The married relationship of Ira and Maggie Moran is explored during their journey from their
Baltimore home to a funeral and back. Winner of the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Adapted to television
in 1994 and the stage in 2003.
